  • Manitoba moose crisis

Great last podcast on moose crisis in Manitoba. Thanks for all the information and non biased opinion. I am a Manitoba resident. Podcast all Canadians should listen to whether you are a hunter or not. So many issues to try and solve and unfortunately the main issues at the heart of it are not what is being dealt with by both sides.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Lessons From The Field: A Career Investigating Predator Attacks || HC Podcast || Ep. 167
Q: How has training evolved for responders dealing with these incidents?
Training expanded from ad hoc responses to structured programs modeled after crime scene investigation, emphasizing incident command systems, multi-agency collaboration, and continuous learning through international trainings, with a focus on safety, evidence gathering, and public communication.
Lessons From The Field: A Career Investigating Predator Attacks || HC Podcast || Ep. 167
Q: What does a modern predator attack investigation look like from call to conclusion?
It begins with a rapid risk assessment, assembling a coordinated response with trained officers, canine units, and field protocols. Investigators gather evidence, assess public safety risk, and determine whether to mitigate or remove the animal, while coordinating with other agencies and managing media narratives to keep the community informed.
Bear Spray: 98% Effective or Placebo? || Project Grizzly Balance || Ep. 8
Q: How does the guest describe bear spray's efficacy compared to firearms in real-world encounters?
The guest argues that bear spray's real-world effectiveness is often overstated due to study design and reporting biases, and that when comparing like-for-like scenarios, firearms tend to outperform bear spray in stopping a bear, though he stresses the need for proper training and caution rather than overreliance on any one tool.
A Late Start That Changed Everything || HC Podcast || Ep. 166
Q: How do you see international perspectives influencing North American conservation models?
Renee highlights how observing European and other international approaches provides fresh insights, emphasizing shared ethics, sustainable use, and the ongoing need to update North American frameworks to reflect diverse cultures and First Nations perspectives.
A Late Start That Changed Everything || HC Podcast || Ep. 166
Q: Why is an all-women space still important for training and development in this field?
She explains that while some women are comfortable in mixed groups, many benefit from a space that reduces intimidation and allows vulnerability, helping them grow and connect with mentors and peers in a supportive environment.
