  • Great info

I’m new to all of this, I’m trying to get into elk hunting and have learned a lot from this show and YouTube videos. Ive personally never been and have met some guys on facebook who are willing to let me tag along to experience the hunt without actually hunting. Wanting to learn a lot before I try taking an elk. So for now planning on just going to see how it all works and help pack meat. Just got my k4 5000 and wow it’s great. Holes weight great and comfortable

  • They're both just normal guys who talk about relevant things. I've learned so much and am still picking up new things. Newer to backcountry hunting and this one is the best.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

MM 302 | Bears, Bivvies, Practice Questions & More...
Q: Do you think the warmer than normal winter weather will impact the emergence, timing, or quality of spring bear season?
While they don't claim to be bear biologists, the hosts suspect warm winters could alter food sources and bear activity timing, suggesting bears may emerge earlier and be more concentrated in food-rich pockets, which in turn affects hunter planning and access.
573 | Everyday Habits for Hunting Performance with Dr. Andy Galpin
Q: How should someone approach sleep in the months leading up to a demanding backcountry mission?
Aim for a consistent sleep schedule, optimize pre-sleep patterns, and minimize late-day stimulants; focus on consistent wake/sleep timing and simple routines rather than a lengthy nightly regimen.
573 | Everyday Habits for Hunting Performance with Dr. Andy Galpin
Q: What should be the top priority for someone preparing for a sheep hunt?
Identify and strengthen your biggest performance anchor—whatever weakness would most likely derail the hunt—and address it first, then layer in other areas like sleep, nutrition, and mindset in a structured, month-by-month plan.
MM 303 | Health, Hot Tents, & Tripod Choices
Q: Matt asked about moving from archery to rifle hunting and considering tripods within a $300 budget for both the tripod and the head. What would be a practical recommendation?
For a $300 budget, a lightweight ASIAC Backcountry Lite tripod paired with a compatible ball head or a Ridgewarden-style head from Wiser Precision provides a strong balance of weight, stability, and versatility for both glassing and shooting. If prioritizing glassing, a ball head like the Aziac Backcountry light ball head paired with the tripod works well; for shooting, a ball-tilted head such as the Ridgewarden offers solid performance. The key is choosing a system that allows close mounting to the magazine and a level head for stable aiming, while staying within budget.
MM 303 | Health, Hot Tents, & Tripod Choices
Q: What are your thoughts on using hot tents in backcountry hunts, and in which scenarios would you consider them given climate and terrain constraints?
Hot tents can be beneficial for drying gear in wet, miserable days, but they introduce complexity and time—packing, setting up, gathering wood, and tearing down. For mobile, fast-paced hunts, they're often unnecessary; in base-camp or less mobile scenarios they can make sense, especially in truly cold or wet environments where drying gear and staying warm outweigh the overhead. Overall, the hosts prefer strategies that don't rely on a stove when moving daily and emphasize planning and layering instead.
