  • Relatable and easy going

200 episodes! I’ve been listening since the beginning. Brittany does such a great job of encouraging us to bring homesteading into our lives no matter what our circumstances may be. It doesn’t have to look or be perfect in order for it to be meaningful for our families!

  • Best podcast ever

So beginner! I wanted to do more homesteading things, but am also married to a very city boy so I didn’t know how to navigate that, but I’ve been listening to this podcast and I love Brittany’s advice and there are a lot of little things that I’ve started doing. Like the garden I over did it my first year and this year I’ve taken her advice to focus on what we normally use so I’m focusing on herbs until I master that. She is amazing and this podcast is so encouraging and not overwhelming, making... more

  • Easy listening, relaxed approach to city homesteading

I’m a “lazy” wannabe homesteader. (There’s nothing lazy about aspiring homesteading). This podcast’s relaxed and no pressure approach to homesteading, gardening, and living more sustainably is right up my alley and is a pleasure to listen to as I tote all the people and animals under my care where they need to go. Highly recommend!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 201. How to Grow Cut Flowers in Any Space with Josie Blessing of Olde Soul Acres
Q: How would you summarize the main message for someone considering starting a cut flower garden?
You can start small, focus on high-impact, low-maintenance varieties, involve family, and gradually build a sustainable system that fits your life, while exploring markets and opportunities to share joy through flowers.
Ep 201. How to Grow Cut Flowers in Any Space with Josie Blessing of Olde Soul Acres
Q: What is one thing from your book that you hope somebody gets from it after reading it?
I hope readers come away with the confidence that they can start growing flowers anywhere and at any level, and that the book provides enough knowledge to build that confidence and inspire action, even if time and space are limited.
Ep 184. Apothecary February Herbal Q&A
Q: How long do you store herbs and how do you store them?
Best results come from drying herbs properly and storing them in amber or opaque jars away from light; for long-term storage, vacuum sealing or Mylar bags can significantly extend potency to about five years, though potency gradually fades over time. Keep a light-dense storage area and rotate stock to use older batches first.
Ep 184. Apothecary February Herbal Q&A
Q: If you could only grow five herbs, what would they be?
Calendula, chamomile, lemon balm, echinacea, and oregano offer a balance of culinary and medicinal uses, providing anti-inflammatory, soothing, and flavor benefits while covering both everyday cooking and seasonal remedies.
Ep 184. Apothecary February Herbal Q&A
Q: Overwintering herbs, can perennial herbs be outside, bringing in your herbs inside? What's the deal here?
Perennial herbs generally can stay outside through winter where conditions permit in your zone; many will come back year after year with minimal protection, while a few (like rosemary) may do better indoors or in pots that can be moved inside for winter. For those kept outside, keep an eye on hard frost dates and provide light cover or mulch to protect roots; for indoor options, bring in the herbs that don't tolerate freezing and make sure they're in bright light.
