  • The real deal

I listen to so many podcasts and learn a lot from the hosts who interview experts. But we can also learn a lot from each other and Cheryl is spending time talking to people who are out there homeschooling every day. I’ve learned so much from these people who are just like me. I look forward to every episode!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#162 Dr. Peter Gray: What Schools Get Wrong About Learning
Q: Can kids still go to college or pursue advanced studies without a traditional high school path?
Yes. Graduates from alternative schools often enter college successfully; many enroll in community college first, build transcripts through self-initiated study, and select paths aligned with their interests.
#162 Dr. Peter Gray: What Schools Get Wrong About Learning
Q: How do unschooling and life learning differ from conventional schooling?
Unschooling centers on supporting the child's own interests without a fixed curriculum or tests, allowing learning to emerge from real-life activities and collaboration rather than structured lesson plans.
#162 Dr. Peter Gray: What Schools Get Wrong About Learning
Q: What led you to question the traditional schooling model?
He describes his own family's negative experiences with public schooling, his son's rebellion against the system, and the search for alternatives that ultimately showed him learning happens best when children follow their interests and engage with meaningful projects.
#160: Homeschooling 5 Kids While Running a Business (And Navigating Dyslexia)
Q: What led you to start homeschooling in the first place?
A combination of wanting more control over their education, concerns about the preschool environment, and a belief that homeschooling could better fit their family lifestyle and business goals.
