  • Great Academic Chats

I have been enjoying this podcast for its thoughtful approach to the historical event of the Holocaust and the deep insights guests bring. My only issue listening is the frequent background noise that permeates episodes - throughout various episodes, sounds including loud typing, someone blowing their nose, background conversation, a pet being fed, and doors opening and closing have made appearances. I’ve had to stop listening in the middle of conversations because it’s so distracting.

  • Good podcast

This is a good podcast about the Holocaust. I am learning a lot and there is a great and interesting collection of different aspects of the Holocaust. Studies of this horrific event need to continue and this podcast is part of that.

One star was deducted because there is an undercurrent of leftist thought in some of the episodes with some of the typical buzzwords. However, it’s not overpowering and a discerning listener should be able to spot and discard this discredited thinking.

  • Brlliant informative respectful

We needs more of this type if serious scholarly but accessible historical documentation and analysis if one of the darkest chapters in human history so that similar events are never EVER to happen again. The other horror is slavery. There is hope when you find a podcast like this

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 78- Polish Mayors and the Holocaust with Grzegorz Rossoliński-Liebe
Q: What about the broader governance structure—how did the Nazi and Polish administrative systems interact in practice?
The General Government maintained Polish local administration with German oversight; most staff remained Polish, and Germans relied on Polish officials to implement policies. Mayors operated within a hierarchy where Kreisthauptmanns or Stadthauptmänner had ultimate authority, but in day-to-day decisions, mayors could shape ghettos, property seizures, and local enforcement, all while navigating the risk of punishment for noncompliance.
Ep. 78- Polish Mayors and the Holocaust with Grzegorz Rossoliński-Liebe
Q: But one of the things that the Nazis require is Jewish employees of communal government to be fired, and the mayors are doing this as well. Can you talk about how this was carried out in practice?
The process began very early in the occupation with the removal of Jewish officials, often followed by a reorganization where Jewish staff were replaced by those deemed loyal or capable of administering the town under German oversight. In Warsaw, for example, two rounds of screening occurred, shifting the composition from religious definitions to racially defined criteria, and though many Jews were dismissed, exact counts are often uncertain due to destroyed records.
Ep. 75- Guilt and the Postwar Lives of Nazi Perpetrators with Katherina von Kellenbach
Q: What are the dynamics within families of Nazi perpetrators after the war, and how do the children and spouses cope with legacy and silence?
The discussion highlights three paths: continued denial, rejection of the perpetrators' legacy, or a nuanced third way that engages with the history without complete condemnation or denial, while emphasizing secrecy and its damaging effects on the second generation.
Ep. 75- Guilt and the Postwar Lives of Nazi Perpetrators with Katherina von Kellenbach
Q: How did amnesty and the secret amnesty memorandum influence postwar treatment of perpetrators, and what role did the churches play?
She outlines a complex network where religio-political pressure, church networks, and solidarity movements pushed for amnesty while defending individuals, often at odds with legal accountability, revealing a tension between forgiveness and justice.
Ep. 73- Babi Yar History and Memory with Victoria Khiterer
Q: How did memory and memorialization evolve from the Soviet era to independent Ukraine?
Memory was suppressed under Soviet rule; Khrushchev and others resisted memorialization, while after independence, official recognition increased and a Jewish monument was built, though debates about the scope of the memorial (Holocaust-specific vs. broader tragedy) persisted.
