  • This is incredible.

I started by listening to the 6 part Tomb of Tutankhamun after searching for something related to that subject. I have now gone back and started at episode 1. This is just incredible. Thank you for creating this podcast.

  • An Amazing trove of Knowledge

As I approach episode 100, I just realized I haven’t given this podcast a review.

What I appreciate about this podcast is that Dominic is very good at actually bringing you into Ancient Egypt. He expands on events, relays what it would feel like to be there to witness the events, and pulls you back in time with him.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The 100 Children of Ramesses II with Prof. Peter Brand
Q: Are these marriages to Ramesses II's daughters sexually consummated, or ceremonial?
Scholars debate this; some consider it a ceremonial arrangement within the palace, while acknowledging ambiguous evidence, with stronger claims leaning toward ceremonial roles and dynastic alliances rather than explicit sexual unions.
The 100 Children of Ramesses II with Prof. Peter Brand
Q: What role do you see these daughters playing within the court and their society?
Daughters mainly appear in temple rituals as chantresses and in ceremonial life; their political power is limited, with some serving as royal wives or queens later, which helped sustain dynastic continuity.
232: Real Housewives of Per-Ramesses with Prof. Peter Brand
Q: What was the purpose of marrying off Ramesses II's daughters to foreign kings?
The practice served as a dual strategy: cementing diplomatic alliances with in-laws while elevating Ramesses II's prestige and legitimacy across different kingdoms, making royal marriages a tool for political influence beyond mere genealogy.
232: Real Housewives of Per-Ramesses with Prof. Peter Brand
Q: How would you characterize Ramesses II's diplomatic persona in the Hittite correspondence?
Brand explains that Ramesses often presents a confident, high-status image with extensive titles, yet the letters reveal him as sometimes thin-skinned and prone to leverage and one-upmanship, creating a nuanced portrait of a ruler who could be both assertive and strategic in his communications.
Introducing Voices of Ancient Egypt with Dr. Melinda Nelson-Hurst
Q: How do you approach teaching hieroglyphs and the language in a way that's approachable for non-experts?
She emphasizes practical strategies for learning hieroglyphs, featuring everyday learners on the show and focusing on accessible methods rather than purely academic approaches.
