  • Great to listen to interviews

I’ve been training through PreKure to become a Health Coach and recently discovered a friend from my school days, Paul Barnett has this podcast. I remember Paul from our days in school between grades 4 to 6 … and at high school. I will share this podcast to my peers in the PreKure Health Coaching community. The connection between youth sport, and Health Coaching adults is intriguing. I recall watching the novice and often untrained coaches who lead our own children who played youth sport over... more

Bob Shillinglaw
Q: I know that you've got this sports psychology background. I wanted to ask you, what have you learned about the role of emotion in leadership?
Emotion is a natural and important part of leadership and performance; coaches should show enthusiasm to elevate performance but also know when to count to ten to maintain focus and avoid sacrificing decisions.
Bob Shillinglaw
Q: Bob, I've got this quote from one of your players, John Grant Jr. He says, I just remember how much he cared for his players. There were times for him to put his foot down, and he did that. How has that approach evolved over your career?
He explains that earlier coaching relied more on severe consequences, but over time he learned to balance firmness with feedback and involvement of players, adjusting his leadership to emphasize learning and accountability rather than punishment.
Eddie O'Sullivan
Q: Do you think leadership can be taught?
Yes, certain aspects can be taught, but leaders emerge from a group when given the space and environment to lead; a leadership group often forms around a captain.
Sam Bird
Q: What did you learn about the difference in leadership styles between CEO responsibilities and head coach duties?
Leading the club required broader strategic thinking, budget and sponsorship awareness, and building the right team around you; being a CEO is about creating the ecosystem that supports the sport and people, while coaching is about raising performance and standards on the court.
Anders Torstensson
Q: What have you learned most, do you think, from the journey yourself and this incredible achievement?
Anders emphasized the importance of knowing oneself and following core values to lead effectively, suggesting personal reflection and clarity are essential for leadership.
