  • Less is more

Only started listening in the past few months. Find Hutchy very easy listening and he will actually give you proper insights which I like.

The Stefanovic/Stokes/NRL rights pod was the best one by far (that I’ve listened to).

This should be the template… 2/3 main issues discussed each week. Not a whole heap of little issues.

The tit for tat around which journos are feuding is tiresome tbh and neither interesting nor entertaining.

    Overall enjoy the pod though.

  • Turned into a Ch 7 cross promo

How is the listening audience meant to feel about the clear and obvious fact this pod is now determined to be a PR arm of the 7 network?

Happy to consume the content but it does feel compromised now with the cross promotion of shows like Spotlight. Only problem for the hosts is the audience is now so aware of what is considered good media product and shows like Spotlight lost all credibility long ago which means the hosts are selling messages the audience don’t believe.

  • ABC Bashing👎

I like the show but the obvious ABC bashing is a snorefest. We get it Hutchy the national broadcaster is your competitor and you want to take it down. Do you think we don’t see that?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S11 E26 - Question Time
Q: What tricks do you use to increase the chances of someone answering a cold call when chasing a story, and how has technology changed access to sources over the years?
The hosts describe prioritizing upfront communication, texting before calling, and leveraging trusted relationships to set clear expectations, acknowledging that caller ID and screening have changed how often sources pick up, but that direct, honest context improves response rates.
S11 E23 - Question Time
Q: Dave on email asks why SEN1170 Sydney is no longer on DAB Digital Radio in Melbourne and why SEN1116 Melbourne is not on DAB in Sydney, seeking a technical explanation for radio consumption changes.
The hosts explain that distribution is limited by spectrum and geography; digital radio is growing, but app-based listening dominates sports fans, and some markets remain a challenge due to licensing and infrastructure.
S11 E23 - Question Time
Q: Ian on email asks whether free-to-air broadcasters missed a trick not purchasing FIFA World Cup rights with a better time zone for Australian viewers.
The consensus is that ratings have been strong for the World Cup; the structural relationship with SBS and FIFA makes it difficult to acquire rights and change distribution, but the show's hosts acknowledge the importance of choosing broadcast strategies carefully.
S11 E19 - Question Time
Q: How can the AFL leverage a strong global audience when rights and content are monetized across platforms?
Leveraging global platforms and partnerships (e.g., Netflix-scale reach) can dramatically expand the audience, and cross-sport collaboration with the NFL could amplify exposure across different seasons and markets.
S11 E19 - Question Time
Q: Which metrics do broadcasters look for entering negotiations over rights deals—reach, average audience, or time spent viewing?
Broadcasters primarily hunt audience and aim to maximize reach while also focusing on time spent viewing, as those together unlock advertising value for the network.
