  • Much needed xpertise and critique of AI

I love almost all the episodes in this podcast - Kerry and Eleanor are fun and very, very knowledgeable about AI and find interesting experts to interview. Great antidote to all the hype but from an informed perspective, it’s not just refusing it but puts it in context and considers the social aspects and potential for harm as well as good. I love that there is an optimism here too: what IS a good robot? I’m a scholar myself and find lots of interesting research through the podcast but I think K... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Revolutionary Microscopes Powering Global Tech Equality with Richard Bowman
Q: What is good technology? Is it even possible? And how can ideas about justice help us work towards it?
Bowman suggests technology itself can be neutral, but the moral dimension lies in how it is owned, governed, and used. Open licensing and distributed control are proposed as pathways to greater accessibility and fairness, enabling collaboration across borders and contexts without centralized bottlenecks.
Designers: Let's Create Abolitionist and Black Liberatory Futures! with Terresa Hardaway
Q: Can you share a concrete example of an abolitionist design project and its impact?
The Stop Killing Black People typography and merchandise campaign started from protest signage, expanded into a comprehensive, open-source style guide and produced thousands of hoodies and signs; it unified community messaging, increased safety during demonstrations, and provided a scalable resource for others to use abolitionist design in their work.
Designers: Let's Create Abolitionist and Black Liberatory Futures! with Terresa Hardaway
Q: How does positionality influence the design process and outcomes?
Positionality is foundational for self-awareness, building trust, and shaping how designers engage with communities; it should drive ongoing reflection and collaborative practices to ensure that design serves collective interests rather than projecting individual perspectives.
Designers: Let's Create Abolitionist and Black Liberatory Futures! with Terresa Hardaway
Q: What is racialized design and how can people identify it in everyday products?
Racialized design emerges from the environment shaped by racism and capitalism, where artifacts encode and reinforce racialized assumptions; identifying it involves tracing how materials, visuals, accessibility, and user experience reflect those embedded biases and seeking to redesign with lived experiences of marginalized groups in mind.
Bonus Episode: The Internet's First Influencer, Tila Tequila, with Lisa Nakamura
Q: So tell us about Tila, what she's brought to the internet and to Celebrity today.
Lisa explains how Tila mapped the early path of online influence, highlighting how attention and popularity were leveraged in the pre-professional era, the dynamics of online celebrity, and the social labor behind that visibility.
