  • Gary is a pro!

Stumbled upon this treasure trove after a week of galloping through prehistoric, Medieval, Roman, and WWII sites in Bretagne and realizing the internal timelines of my French husband and I were a mess. Our visit to the Carn de Barnenez led me to this podcast and I’ve been hooked for months. Gary’s start at the very beginning approach is excellent and helps to make a lot of unconnected books and visits make a lot more sense. His guest podcasters are also great. I’ve learned so much and continue t... more

  • Excellent Deep Dive Yet Concise

Excellent deep dive yet Gary is still perfectly concise. He explains events in Gaul and France, with a nod to broader world events. Wonderful voice and sense of humor.

  • Life lessons

I LOVE the FHP. Gary’s passionate and methodical research and love of French culture and language make this a must for anyone who truly desires to understand what makes France tick. I have learnt so much not only about France but European and world history, it’s hard to pinpoint one strand or episode. Hint: order it from oldest to new and start from the first episode to get the most of it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

France on the High Seas with Dr.s Christopher Hodson & Brett Rushforth
Q: How do the authors describe the balance between private enterprise and state power in early modern France?
The early period saw privateers and merchants acting with limited crown oversight, driven by profitable ventures like cod fisheries and privateering. Over time, rulers like Louis XIV sought to centralize control and build port infrastructure, yet the private underworld persisted, creating a dynamic tension between state ambition and private initiative.
France on the High Seas with Dr.s Christopher Hodson & Brett Rushforth
Q: Can you explain how France's Atlantic activity challenged the idea of France as mainly a land power?
France's Atlantic engagements, including privateering, coastal trade, and colonial ventures, created a web of transoceanic interactions that connected France to West Africa, the Caribbean, and North America. This network involved many non-state actors and private interests, which gradually drew royal power into a more centralized maritime framework, while still maintaining a significant and enduring underworld of private enterprise that influenced policy.
Becoming a Terrorist with Dr. Jeff Horn
Q: How did he manage to escape imprisonment multiple times during the terror and after?
The answer centers on political networks, allies among Dantonists, and shifts in power that allowed his release and continued influence, despite repeated denunciations and imprisonment.
Becoming a Terrorist with Dr. Jeff Horn
Q: How did youth influence his role in the Revolution and his path to becoming a terrorist figure?
The guest explains that youth amplified his capacity to be useful, to ingratiate, and to move quickly through the ranks, carrying idealistic visions of a democratic France that he attempts to realize through violent and coercive means when necessary.
Becoming a Terrorist with Dr. Jeff Horn
Q: Tell us about his background and how he joins up with the revolution.
Horn describes Rousselin's early life from a Paris-born textile worker family, his education near the elites, and how his proximity to influential figures like Danton and Desmoulins helps him enter the revolutionary bureaucracy and later the confidential networks that sustain him.
