  • Great insights and good vibes!

Jim and Katie provide really useful bite sized insights throughout each episode that makes them digestible and keep the momentum of the episode moving (which I think a lot of endurance sports podcasts lack). Love every ep!

  • Not your Mom's podcast.

Unless your Mom is a rockstar coach, athlete, and human (and she might be). These days, anyone can launch a podcast. But Jim and Katie are not just anyone. Their thoughtful curation of topics, prepared and organized discussion, sharing of real-life experiences, and accessible guidance (for new and tenured athletes and all in between) always leave me with multiple useful nuggets, and validate that my experiences are not singular to me. Plus, they are really fun and conversational and easy to list... more

  • Great podcast

This is a very informative and data driven podcast. Katie and Jim are able to produce a high-quality podcast with conversational style that is easy to listen to. Real life experience and decades long research by the hosts is a perfect blend for those who are just starting out or have been doing triathlon for years. Also, the addition of personal examples with paces, watts and times make it very helpful for those of us looking to get that extra 1-2%. Thank you Jim and Katie.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 133: Strength Training for Endurance Athletes with Maggie Mullins, DPT
Q: How should strength training be scheduled around running workouts?
Avoid pairing strength with hard quality runs; instead, place strength on a lighter or separate day, or after an easy run, ensuring there's adequate recovery and that runs remain the primary training priority.
Episode 133: Strength Training for Endurance Athletes with Maggie Mullins, DPT
Q: What does a typical strength program look like for most runners?
A typical program balances 1-3 sessions per week, focusing on heavy double-leg lifts (like squats or deadlifts) with complementary single-leg moves, hip work, calf raises, and a plyometric component, all paired with mindful rep schemes (roughly 3-6 sets of 6-8 reps for strength/hypertrophy and 12-30 reps for muscular endurance) and a focus on not training to failure for endurance athletes.
Episode 123: Flow State, Intrinsic Motivation, and the Power of Storytelling with Writer and Ultrarunner Katie Arnold
Q: What does flow state mean to you, and can you describe a moment when you were in flow for an extended period?
She explains flow as a scientifically grounded state of deep immersion where time dilates and effort aligns with challenge, sharing the Leadville 100 win as a peak example where she remained in flow for nearly 20 hours.
Episode 123: Flow State, Intrinsic Motivation, and the Power of Storytelling with Writer and Ultrarunner Katie Arnold
Q: Tell us your story and how you brought running and writing together to become who you are today.
Katie describes growing up as an outdoor athlete who found running a creative practice, moving from editor/writer roles to ultrarunning after personal loss, and how long-form writing and running merged into a cohesive life path.
Episode 118: Post-Event Fueling, Regulating Your Nervous System, and Racing on Zwift and TrainingPeaks Virtual
Q: What type of strength should I be doing at this time of year?
Athletes should focus on general strength exercises, but as they approach specific race training, they should modify their strength routine to prevent interfering with endurance workouts. A minimum effective dose for strength training is often sufficient while ensuring enough endurance volume is maintained.
