  • Great Show Please Talk Slower

The content of the show is top tier and so insightful as a new runner. However, as a podcast listener I would appreciate a slightly slower pace of talking. Because the show covers a lot of topics, it is sometimes hard to digest everything when you are talking so fast. I would also suggest less side tangent rambles or phrases like “I always say…” and less lip smacking after pauses/ums.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Long Should Your Longest Run Be? Hot Race Cooling, Strength Training Timing & More | Q&A Episode
Q: What is the longest training run for your first 100 miler?
The answer is nuanced: it depends, but you should consider not overemphasizing a single longest run and instead focus on consistency, overall volume, and how you structure back-to-back long runs or a 50-mile tune-up roughly six to eight weeks out depending on your experience.
Running a New Distance, When to Replace Running Shoes, Overcoming Re-Injury Anxiety, and More | Q&A Episode
Q: How many miles on a shoe is too many for it to be your race shoe?
There isn't a single mileage number that applies to every shoe. The dominant approach is to evaluate three benchmarks: tread wear (visible wear on the outsole), a noticeable loss of comfort or cushion, and the emergence of niggles or pains. If all three are present, it's likely time to retire the shoe; if only one or two are borderline, you may still use it for less demanding runs or specific surfaces. For race-day, it's best to use as fresh a shoe as possible within these benchmarks, accepting that some brands may last longer than others. Regularly tracking mileage within the same brand helps refine your personal life expectancy for that shoe.
Heat Training for Ultrarunning: How to Heat Train Correctly
Q: How many times a week should you heat train to get meaningful stimulus?
One session per week is not enough; you need a dedicated sequence (7–10 consecutive days) to build acclimation, after which you can maintain with lighter or less frequent exposure, but a single weekly session typically yields minimal benefits.
How to Train Better and Build a More Positive Mindset for Ultramarathons and Training with Barrett Few
Q: What training changes helped Barrett progress from 50K/50M to 100M?
He realized the need for more structured training beyond volume, incorporating speed work, VO2, threshold work, cross-training, and later a focus on pacing and fueling strategies.
How to Train Better and Build a More Positive Mindset for Ultramarathons and Training with Barrett Few
Q: When did Barrett's mindset shift begin and how did it influence his running journey?
Barrett describes moving from a melancholy period around 2015 into running as a catalyst for life transformation, using mindfulness and opening up to new experiences to fuel consistent training and personal growth.
