  • Amazing podcast

Few folks care as much about promoting the sport and lifestyle of ultra running like Joe. His entire goal is to promote positivity in running and it bleeds through in every “show”. Him and his group is doing everything they can to promote running and helping everyone from every background be the best ultra runners possible.

  • Really Nice Genuine Guy - Tough to Follow or Understand

The host seems like a genuinely good guy, and the podcast occasionally features strong guests and useful information. There are definitely moments when the show provides real value, especially when the conversation is focused.

That said, the communication style can be difficult to follow at times and is far from ideal for a podcast host. The host often jumps around, over-explains points, and could benefit from being more concise and structured, or from producing the podcast with a different hos... more

  • Great Show Please Talk Slower

The content of the show is top tier and so insightful as a new runner. However, as a podcast listener I would appreciate a slightly slower pace of talking. Because the show covers a lot of topics, it is sometimes hard to digest everything when you are talking so fast. I would also suggest less side tangent rambles or phrases like “I always say…” and less lip smacking after pauses/ums.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How to Balance Ultra Training With a Busy Life, Fix Race-Day Stomach Issues, and Build Mileage Safely | Q&A Episode
Q: How important is sauna for recovery and heat training?
Sauna is very important for heat adaptation and recovery, especially as a passive heat training method; emphasize sleep, hydration, and nutrition as must-haves, and use sauna sparingly to avoid added stress.
How to Balance Ultra Training With a Busy Life, Fix Race-Day Stomach Issues, and Build Mileage Safely | Q&A Episode
Q: How do you plan a route when training on time and relying on out-and-back runs?
Plan using past pace data to estimate time, accept plus/minus 15 minutes as acceptable for long runs, and use out-and-backs to precisely match target time, adjusting by turning around earlier or shaving volume from other sessions if needed.
How to Balance Ultra Training With a Busy Life, Fix Race-Day Stomach Issues, and Build Mileage Safely | Q&A Episode
Q: Do you believe in the 10% rule for mileage increases, or should we tailor it individually?
The host argues the 10% rule is a general guideline, not universal; for some it's appropriate, for others it's too aggressive or too conservative. The key is to listen to the body, test changes gradually, and adjust based on how training feels, especially as volume grows.
A Manifesto for Runners with a 9-5 Job with Brian Peterson
Q: What does the 9-5 mean for runners and how can they use it to their advantage?
The 9-5 represents the majority of listeners who balance full-time life with running; it emphasizes community, sacrifice, and building a sustainable path that integrates training into a busy life rather than prioritizing running above all else.
From Injury to a 10 Hour PR at Cocodona: Randi Zuckerberg’s Second Cocodona 250
Q: How did your mindset shift between Cocodona 1 and Cocodona 2 affect your approach to the race?
I moved from thinking the distance was a near-impossible challenge to knowing it was attainable, which eased pressure and allowed me to focus on continuous improvement, team collaboration, and executing a plan rather than fearing the distance.
