Oh My! I have only seen Natalie in passing at her aid station at Kettle but I feel so connected with what she’s saying! Natalie would be the coach for me!! I am in the busy season of life with kids too.

  • Worth a listen!

This podcast is great for anyone interested in learning more- even if you have never stepped foot on a trail beginner or are an experienced runner Michele Hartwig and her team have created a podcast that lifts up Midwest trail running (with some other sports thrown in too).

They have interviews with the big names but also some great gems like the loyal volunteers of the Hennepin 100 or Ryan Steiner on how running helped him to loose weight and gave him a vehicle to find community as an Autis... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Fueling Science: Carbs, Protein, and Creatine with Gnarly Nutrition CEO Shannon O'Grady
Q: What about the perceived cognitive and brain health benefits of creatine?
Creatine can support cognitive function under stress (e.g., sleep deprivation), may help in traumatic brain injury recovery, and could modestly assist with depressive symptoms and PTSD when used alongside appropriate medical treatment; however, it is not a universal panacea and should be viewed as a potential aid.
Fueling Science: Carbs, Protein, and Creatine with Gnarly Nutrition CEO Shannon O'Grady
Q: Can you explain creatine dosing basics and how to minimize gut distress when loading?
Use weight-based dosing: maintenance around 0.03 g per kg per day; loading around 0.3 g/kg per day, split into multiple doses (e.g., four or five 5 g portions) to reduce GI distress; creatine monohydrate is the recommended form with third-party testing for safety.
Fueling Science: Carbs, Protein, and Creatine with Gnarly Nutrition CEO Shannon O'Grady
Q: What should people consider when choosing a protein product like Gnarly's, especially for athletes who train regularly?
Emphasize total daily protein, consider the quality and form of protein, and acknowledge that Gnarly positions itself around trusted formulations with third-party certifications; for many, whole foods supplementing with protein powder is acceptable, but sustainability and personal tolerance are key.
Fueling Science: Carbs, Protein, and Creatine with Gnarly Nutrition CEO Shannon O'Grady
Q: Let's talk a little bit about protein. What's a practical recommendation for daily protein intake and how should timing fit in?
The guest explains that while timing around workouts matters less than total daily protein, a target of about 1.5 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight is a good ceiling for highly active athletes; for those training less, roughly 1.3 to 1.4 g/kg can suffice. It's the total daily intake and spreading it reasonably across meals that matters most.
Fix Your Feet for the Long Run: Foot Pain, Injuries & the Runner's Brain
Q: How do I know what my ankle mobility is, whether it's good or bad, is there a way I can check that?
The knee-to-wall test is a simple way to check ankle mobility; if your heel can remain down while your knee touches the wall, then that's considered normal.
