  • Thank You

Thank you for doing this podcast. While being very informative, the most important is the reasoning. It humanizes law enforcement while explaining the “why” that can be confusing and frustrating. I have always believed that if people understood the split-second decisions you guys have to make in awful circumstances almost daily it would put things in a clearer perspective. Keep up the great work. Thank you guys for all you do and God Bless!

  • The war we owe them

Interesting guest and topic. However. Pet peeve….in the crime talk world, whether by LE or citizens, the word female is used to discuss women. This guest did that constantly. It dehumanizes women. Rarely do you hear men, even criminals, referred to as male. Very irritating.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Adrenaline Trap: The Rush, The Crash, The Cost
Q: What happens after the adrenaline rush, and why is the crash something we need to address in policing?
The adrenaline crash involves cognitive post-event effects like second-guessing, slower information processing, sleep disruption, and potential PTSD symptoms if not managed. Failing to address the crash can lead to chronic stress, impaired judgment in future incidents, and long-term health risks, so departments should provide aftercare, mental health support, and training on recognizing and coping with these changes.
The Adrenaline Trap: The Rush, The Crash, The Cost
Q: Can you kind of explain to us a little bit about the physiology that's going on when adrenaline spikes?
Adrenaline, cortisol, and other chemicals flood the bloodstream, shunting blood to the core to prepare for potential injury and increasing stamina and reaction time, while simultaneously narrowing focus to the most threatening cues and altering time perception and decision-making. Training and awareness can help, but the physiological response often outpaces conscious thought, making rapid, automatic responses necessary.
First Call to Final Verdict: Before the Case Exists
Q: What does the Legislative Council do in practical terms?
Zach Stock explains that the Legislative Council acts as a liaison between the Public Defender Council and the legislative branch, advocating for defender perspectives, and helping to translate policy goals into workable law and funding structures.
The War We Owe Them: Sean’s Story
Q: What is your best advice for anyone who suspects something is happening?
Start with a comfortable conversation, ensure the child feels safe, and allow them to share their vulnerabilities; sometimes sharing personal experiences helps them open up.
The War We Owe Them: Sean’s Story
Q: Was there some point during all of this that there were, you know, signs to you that something was wrong, that this just wasn't right? And how did that look?
Sean describes how he was initially unaware of the wrongness of his situation, thinking that the attention from older individuals was love, but he later realized that it was fake love and not normal.
