  • Minors tried as adults

Love both your podcasts! I work in education and mental health with troubled juvenile populations. Some of my students have had legal issues and a few have been accused of extremely serious crimes . Some of them have been tried as adults when they have been 12 or 13 at the time the crime was committed. This seems bizarre to me . What is the law say about this? I’m in Indiana.

  • Tremendous Coverage!

I so appreciate how carefully the two of you have handled the reversal of the monetary judgment in the Kowalski case.

I would strongly encourage people who believe that MK was being separated from her mother for no reason except to cause the child and her family extreme emotional distress to give Nobody Should Believe Me’s coverage of that case a listen.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

179. Ivan Bates on Crime in Baltimore and the Adnan Syed Case
Q: Last time you were here, you did say if you discovered new evidence, you would reconsider Adnan's case. I assume you're not reconsidering Adnan's case at this point?
No new evidence has been presented, thus I have not reconsidered Adnan's case.
179. Ivan Bates on Crime in Baltimore and the Adnan Syed Case
Q: Since you brought it up, I do want to ask, because we are seeing younger and younger kids commit more and more violent acts.
Juvenile crime was not something I expected to face. Our new juvenile facilities are ineffective, leading to an increase in juvenile crime rates.
179. Ivan Bates on Crime in Baltimore and the Adnan Syed Case
Q: Have you been able to sort of export this across the state? Do you run into problems with other state's attorneys to push back?
It's been going very well. Despite political differences, we work together on public safety, which is a common goal regardless of party affiliation.
179. Ivan Bates on Crime in Baltimore and the Adnan Syed Case
Q: What kind of support did you get from the legislature and from the governor to take these steps that you took as state's attorney?
We mainly get our funding from the city, and while we asked for funds for body-worn cameras, the governor provided us $900,000 which began to change the mentality.
175. The Shadow of the Bridge - Interview with Kevin Greenlee and Aine Cain
Q: What do you hope your book brings to this case?
We hope it helps reclaim the story for Abby and Libby and emphasizes their legacy over the perpetrator's narrative.
