I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the show. The content has been insightful and conversation very engaging.

I would like to recommend that you interview Jonathan Leeman. He has written both at a popular (How the Nations Rage) and more academic level (Political Church) regarding this topic and seems to be one of the leading voices in the reformed evangelical community. I think many would benefit from the conversation.

  • Superb!

The first episodes of the podcast have been superb! The discussions have been lively and informative. I am looking forward to future episodes as Leithart and Wood seek to flesh out what an ecclesiocentric post-liberal political theology looks like.

I desperately want to love this podcast. The subject is of great interest to me and I’ve accepted Peter into my heart more than once, but this isn’t getting it done. There needs to be a better laid foundation of purpose, concepts and definitions. The latest episode with D.C. Schindler was a meandering mess and he repeatedly failed to answer Peter’s questions, to the point where I started to wonder if he doesn’t actually know what he’s talking about or if there are conceptual distinctions being m... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 34: Sacred Foundations - A Conversation with Anna Grzymala-Busse
Q: Is it appropriate to call the church a state, therefore? Or is that...
The church is not a state. It is an authority but its claims are universal. As a temporal authority, it is a state within the Papal States, but outside of that, it was never a theocracy.
Episode 34: Sacred Foundations - A Conversation with Anna Grzymala-Busse
Q: Could you summarize some of the key points of ironic backfiring where the Church secured a type of victory and ultimately it inevitably set up its own decline?
The Church helps to hand over all these resources to these temporal rulers, who then become their adversaries, which is like raising teenagers that become independent and use their resources against you.
Episode 34: Sacred Foundations - A Conversation with Anna Grzymala-Busse
Q: Can you summarize how you're using that term and why you think it's legitimate to use that term, not just for states that emerged like in the 19th century or something like that?
What I argue is that insofar as we see state formation in the Middle Ages, it arises out of two different processes: conflict with the church and emulation of its practices.
Episode 30: A Conversation with David P. Goldman
Q: Do you see that as a major shift? If it is a major shift, how would you characterize that shift?
Goldman explains that great technological changes create winners and losers and that the current economic climate has profoundly affected job markets and manufacturing.
Episode 15: A Conversation with Dr. Andrew Jones
Q: You describe liberalism as a loss of hope. How is this evident?
Hope is the temporal virtue that brings faith and charity into the temporal flux...what hope does is remove the ground for the merely human political, which is the fear of death.
