Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why carbon removal needs a new story
Q: What do you think is the near-term demand driver for carbon removal if compliance markets don't deliver the bulk of the demand in the next decade?
Voluntary demand and corporate claims will likely be the primary near-term drivers, with a path toward some compliance demand later; companies should model scenarios to understand revenue and capacity needs under different demand trajectories.
Why carbon removal needs a new story
Q: Why do you think sectors like aviation and shipping have largely ignored carbon removal in their decarbonization roadmaps, and how should they change their approach?
These sectors have favored fuel-switching and see carbon removal as an offset rather than an integrated tool; the panel argues they should embed CDR to offset residuals where reductions aren't feasible yet, while ensuring MRV and permanence to maintain credibility.
Why carbon removal needs a new story
Q: And I wanted to hear a bit more from you, like, how would you describe carbon removal's role today for a typical listener? And what's changed in your thinking since we've had you on a year and a half or a little less than that?
Carbon removal should be viewed as a core, payments-enabled tool that complements emissions reductions, with a practical focus on proving out methods, reducing costs, and delivering verifiable results at scale rather than chasing unrealistic gigaton targets too early.
Philanthropy's role in shaping climate finance
Q: How can folks get involved? How can they support your work?
We want to see that happening more in Canada and in more places as well. We really want to grow the Revolving Fund.
Philanthropy's role in shaping climate finance
Q: Can you tell us a bit more about some of the companies that are benefiting from the revolving fund or will benefit from the revolving fund in the near term?
We've announced the first purchases we're making from it. It's led us bring in our first Enhanced Rock Weathering Purchases and our first BioChar.
