  • Great for marketing educators.

I wish there was a companion video component to these interviews. I teach marketing, and would be able to use these videos in my classes. But if I have students listen to a podcast during class, they would get bored and tune out, since there is no video accompanying it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 171 with Paul Weingard, President & CEO, Schylling
Q: How do you approach product development when you're so rooted in nostalgia yet need to introduce new items like Neato?
Schylling looks to the archives for relaunch opportunities and also creates modernized versions of traditional play activities. Neato exemplifies this by combining retro-inspired graphic treatments with contemporary tactile and sensory design to keep products fresh while preserving nostalgic appeal.
Ep. 171 with Paul Weingard, President & CEO, Schylling
Q: Has play changed and how has that affected how you market to the current generation, given the digital competition for kids' attention?
While play patterns remain instinctual and universal, digital content and screens create a noisy environment. Schylling focuses on open-ended, imaginative play and communicates nostalgia as a bridge between parents and children, using in-store experiences and packaging to highlight the timeless value of their products while leveraging social and e-commerce channels for visibility.
Ep. 171 with Paul Weingard, President & CEO, Schylling
Q: Paul, tell us a little bit about Schylling, about its history, but also the major brands that I think all of us remember playing with, but we may not know them as brands.
Schylling has celebrated 50 years, started with a windup Ornithopter and built a portfolio around classic, nostalgic playthings that retailers could carry through independent shops. Over time, the company broadened into recognizable brands like Lava Lamp and Big Wheel, while keeping the traditional play patterns intact and expanding into modern channels with careful branding and packaging.
Ep. 179 with Ben Sylvan, SVP of Connected Media, Keurig Dr Pepper
Q: How do you ensure brand safety and manage AI-related risks as you scale personalization and automation?
Brand safety is addressed by mixing AI thoughtfully, clearly defining strategy and training models, and using advanced context-aware evaluation to avoid unsafe placements while expanding inventory opportunities.
Ep. 179 with Ben Sylvan, SVP of Connected Media, Keurig Dr Pepper
Q: So how are you structuring your team differently now and what lessons from The Trade Desk are you building upon?
The approach centers on true accountability, integrated planning across PESO, and a single campaign leader who orchestrates the entire journey from planning to optimization, ensuring real-time adjustments and holistic measurement.
