Welcome to the podcast version of The Best Laid Plans, the winner of the 2008 Stephen Leacock Award for Humour. It's a satirical novel of Canadian politics, written and podcast by Terry Fallis. It recounts the unlikely and eventful alliance between a 30-something burnt out, jaded political staffer, and an older, cantankerous, engineering professor. Driven by a federal election and the life of the ... more

This is an excellent book/podcast. I can’t believe it took me so long to find it. No wonder it won Canada’s highest award for humor. Terry’s writing style is smart and witty, and you need to listen closely, or you might miss a real gem. I love this book. I hope you keep on writing Terry!
This podcast novel was truly great and motivated me to listen carefully and attentively to every interesting and witty sentence. The writing shows a brilliant intelligence and deep thought. The author’s voice is a pleasure to listen to. Terry Fallis has a great talent with using descriptive and lively language. I was moved deeply by the journal entries of Angus addressed to his deceased wife at the end of each chapter. The sentiments are very touching and communicate deep love, tenderness, a... more
This book is a work of art, and it was pure joy to listen to this podcast. Recommended by my sister, I had read the prologue - aloud, to my family - and was instantly hooked.
I was very happy to learn that Fallis wrote a sequel, I will listen to it starting immediately.
Listening to Terry Fallis read this novel via the podcast is an incredible audio treat and almost as good as having a chance to hear him read live at a book signing. I've had the pleasure of seeing Terry live at a book event, and this podcast comes really close to the experience.
Fallis introduces each chapter and reads from the novel as if you were seated comfortably in a lounge with a dear friend. Even the musical selection used at the beginning of each chapter eloquently sets the mood. Get ... more
I was reluctant to listen to a novel about politics until I heard another fan saying the same thing, and finishing up with how much he'd enjoyed it. "Give it a try," he said, "you won't be sorry," and that's what I'm telling you. This is not politics as told on TV, it is living, breathing characters, some of them you will wish were your friends and neighbors, some of them you will wish you *had* seen on the news! All of them are entertaining and colorful. Another thing you should know is that yo... more
Terry Fallis tells a hilarious and excellent story of a plan to exit politics that goes awry and winds up very reluctantly bringing into office the kind of honorable and direct politician I think we all would like to have, regardless of the country in which we live. While obviously focused on Canadian politics and customs, Terry provides enough commentary to clue those of outside the world of Ottawa into some of the nuances of that particular flavor of democracy. Very enjoyable and fun to list... more
Listen to Terry read this book is like going out for coffee with a good friend. The more I listen, the more I look forward to hearing more. I don't want it to end! I love the personal comments at the beginning and end of each chapter. More, please! Peter
While political junkies will adore this novel, enough fun exists within for even non-voters to thoroughly enjoy the work of Mr. Fallis. If I could give it 6 stars, I would.
The Best Laid Plans is an engaging political satire- told with warmth and humour rather than just pure cynicism. While it is set in Canada, the broad themes in the novel will be familiar to listeners in many countries. The novel has an energetic feel, with an original and entertaining turn of phrase. Besides having many years experience in Canadian federal politics, writer Terry Fallis is also an accomplished podcaster- check out Inside PR, the weekly public relations podcast which Terry c... more
That pretty much says it all, I mean that, whoa. Its like the West Wing and a John Cleese novel rolled into one. I can honestly say listening to a tale of infidelity and then a...well something that was turned into a Olympic sport (Stoop and scoop people, unless there's a audience present.). And Terry, if you read this...thank you. your saying what a lot of us, even a Brit like myself, think.
