  • Real Recognize Real

If you are looking for a podcast that values 'receipts' over rhetoric, The Adversity Advantage is essential listening. Doug Bopst has a rare gift for taking the heaviest topics—trauma, addiction, and rock bottom—and reframing them as the ultimate competitive advantage.

What sets this show apart is Doug’s ability to lead with radical accountability. He doesn't just ask the tough questions; he has lived the answers. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Doug for my own podcast, LongShots, an... more

  • Wow! Wow!

Doug Bopst’s podcast appeared on my Apple podcast Algerism and it exceeds my expectations. I just listened to the interview with Sahil Bloom.

I had to stop cleaning, get my notebook out and follow along with the transcript. I’m often feeling down, in my 60’s, children grown , hopeless but there were so many inspiring ideas and reminders that my life is and can be amazing.

    Thank you so much.

Your Brain Is Overstimulated… Here's What To Do About It | Dr. Tommy Wood
Q: What role does nature and outdoor activity play in this balance?
Being outdoors resets circadian rhythms, reduces rumination, lowers stress, and offers sensory experiences that improve mood and cognitive function, making it a practical, accessible habit to support long-term focus.
Your Brain Is Overstimulated… Here's What To Do About It | Dr. Tommy Wood
Q: Is it ever helpful to do a full dopamine detox by quitting social media, or is gradual replacement and improving sleep enough?
A complete cold-turkey detox can help some people, but most benefits come from gradually replacing digital engagement with meaningful activities, improving sleep, and engaging in challenging cognitive tasks that provide longer-term rewards.
Your Brain Is Overstimulated… Here's What To Do About It | Dr. Tommy Wood
Q: What are practical, evidence-based steps to rebalance and reduce reliance on cheap dopamine?
Focus on structured work blocks, create true undistracted time, replace social media with meaningful activities like skill-building or exercise, get sufficient sleep to reset the system, and slowly diversify your sources of reward through challenging but rewarding tasks.
Your Brain Is Overstimulated… Here's What To Do About It | Dr. Tommy Wood
Q: So I'd like to separate dopamine into two categories, healthy dopamine and cheap dopamine, just to make it simple. And so the reason I bring that up is, as we're talking about things like focus and motivation and getting things done that are meaningful, why does quote unquote cheap dopamine make it harder to get things done?
Dopamine fuels motivation by signaling an expected future reward, and social media leverages social information to create frequent dopamine hits, which can hijack focus; excessive cheap dopamine reduces our motivation to pursue more meaningful, effortful activities and makes us more susceptible to distraction.
Why So Many People Secretly Regret Smoking Weed | Lindsey Metselaar
Q: What was the process of getting sober like, especially seven years ago when there weren't as many conversations about quitting weed?
It happened gradually through in-person meetings, therapy, and building a support network; the option to seek help felt more accessible as she engaged with people in the room and reconnected with emotions.
