  • Fantastic, but not for kids

Great podcast with fantastic hosts and lots of interesting discussions. Be warned though it’s not for kids, despite Steve’s involvement, as many of the episodes have sexual content. A parent advisory at the beginning of the episodes would be the responsible thing to do.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A: Ancient Fish Eyes, Chowing Chimps and the Deserts That Mimic Mars
Q: Memory questions about animals—do any suffer memory loss or dementia, and what about dolphins and Alzheimer's-like toxins?
The panel discusses cognitive dysfunction in aging pets like dogs and cats, explains concussion signs in animals, and describes dolphins showing Alzheimer's-like toxins linked to cyanobacteria, illustrating how environmental health can impact animal brains.
Q&A: Ancient Fish Eyes, Chowing Chimps and the Deserts That Mimic Mars
Q: Keon Josanna asks if there's a desert so hot that germs can't survive there and where it is.
The hosts address the question as a myth but note hotspots like the Atacama Desert and Lut Desert; while Atacama is extremely inhospitable, the Lut Desert has recorded some of the highest surface temperatures, and microbes have been found deep in the soil in both environments.
Q&A: Ancient Fish Eyes, Chowing Chimps and the Deserts That Mimic Mars
Q: Which animal is the weakest relative to its size, not just across the whole spectrum of animals?
The discussion highlights that muscle mass and lifestyle matter; sloths are notably weak for their size due to low muscle mass and lifestyle, while jellyfish and some deep-sea creatures also show low muscular strength, with humans being comparatively less powerful in certain contexts but adapted for endurance and tool use.
Q&A: Ancient Fish Eyes, Chowing Chimps and the Deserts That Mimic Mars
Q: Hiya, I'm wondering about vision underwater. Do animals that live there see the same distance as us, or is their vision different underwater?
The hosts explain that underwater vision is fundamentally different due to the medium; aquatic eyes rely on internal lenses and protective adaptations, creating a different focusing mechanism than human eyes in air, and many species have evolved to cope with water chemistry and pressure.
Q&A: Vertical Sleepers, Sky Dances and the Infamous Worm Dance
Q: Is it true that some animals like sperm whales sleep vertically, and if so, why? Are there other animals that do it too?
Steve responds that many mammals sleep standing or perched, but sperm whales are notable for their vertical sleeping in the water, often as a pod. He describes unihemispheric sleep and true sleep, the filming context in Dominica, and notes that the vertical sleep can last from about 10–15 minutes up to two hours, serving to conserve energy and allow the whales to remain buoyant and ready to breathe. He shares the memorable footage and emphasizes how unusual and captivating the behavior is.
