  • Innovative approaches

I just listened to the episode on using assessments with supervisees and I can’t wait to implement this in my practice. I’ve been looking for a way to deepen how we relate and connect to our supervisees while allowing space for both to be authentic and I think this will really help. I love how this show brings exciting and different approaches to supervision that go beyond what we are taught in school.

Supervision Gone Wrong: A Story of Power and Betrayal
Q: What is your message to listeners about navigating licensing hurdles after a harmful supervision experience?
Protect your license hours by ensuring supervisors are properly approved, seek timely guidance from licensing boards, and build a support network that can validate credentials and provide safe pathways forward when a supervisor turns dangerous.
Supervision Gone Wrong: A Story of Power and Betrayal
Q: What was the turning point that made you realize you needed to change your course, and what would you tell others about recognizing red flags?
The turning point was when boundaries collapsed into overt control, including house meetings, family involvement, and coercive language about staying in the relationship. I would tell others to trust their gut, document concerns, and seek external supervision or reporting channels as soon as red flags appear.
Supervision Gone Wrong: A Story of Power and Betrayal
Q: Can you describe how the supervision relationship started to feel inappropriate and what indicators you ignored at first?
Early on there were red flags about boundaries and the degree of personal involvement. The supervisor invited me into her personal life and asked for frequent contact outside of professional sessions, which gradually blurred lines and created a sense of dependency and risk.
No One Says This: Real Questions Every Clinician Quietly Wonders About
Q: Question number ten. What's the most important thing supervision should provide?
Clinical courage—developing the ability to tolerate uncertainty, think clinically, remain regulated, and continually grow through feedback and reflection.
No One Says This: Real Questions Every Clinician Quietly Wonders About
Q: Question number nine. What makes supervision ethical?
Ethical supervision centers on informed consent, boundaries, transparency, cultural responsiveness, and a constant awareness of the power dynamic between supervisors and supervisees.
