  • So many great things here!

My favorite part about this podcast is getting to listen in to real coaching conversations. This an an invaluable experience. But Steve also shares so much wisdom, and he lets us in on his thought processes. Many of his episodes are also geared to classroom teachers, not just coaches, which makes it easy to share his insights with teachers. I’m just sorry I only recently discovered this podcast!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Intersection of Curriculum, Technology, and People to Deliver Learning Outcomes
Q: What role do instructional coaches and building-level leaders play in making this three-way intersection work?
They are essential for capacity building in districts, ensuring that coaches and leaders understand and implement the curriculum with fidelity, and that professional learning is embedded at both the classroom and building levels to keep the system coherent.
The Intersection of Curriculum, Technology, and People to Deliver Learning Outcomes
Q: Would you talk a little bit about what you mean by an intersection of curriculum, technology, and people?
The intersection is an interconnected system where curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning align and support each other, and technology serves to make that alignment practical and scalable for diverse classrooms; with the right tools, teachers save time, personalize learning, and deliver better outcomes.
Rigor and Scaffolding
Q: So a lot of our listeners are instructional coaches, and I know that that's part of your role and your background. If coaches were exploring rigor with teachers, either in a PLC setting or in coaching conferences, what are some questions that they might use to engage teachers in reflecting about rigor?
The guest emphasizes that rigor should be explored collaboratively, starting with the unit or lesson goals, asking teachers where students are now, and using backward design to map the path to mastery, while keeping conversations concrete and strategy-based so teachers can take actionable steps immediately.
Inside-Out vs. Outside-In Observation
Q: What is the practical takeaway for a school looking to implement this approach?
Use a simple protocol to collect evidence from a small sample of students, interpret it collaboratively with teachers, and identify small, doable actions to improve clarity and learning for those students.
Inside-Out vs. Outside-In Observation
Q: How should teachers approach buy-in for inside-out observation?
Teachers should withhold full buy-in initially and engage by behaving in ways that build trust, starting with small steps rather than a full rollout, so trust is earned through practice and shared experiences.
