  • Post-retirement Saviors

After 30 years as an engineering technologist in the mining industry, retirement was tough. My brain had temporarily turned into mush, especially since my retirement coincided with the Covid restrictions. After hearing my constant whining, my adult children urged me to start

searching podcasts for something inspiring. This I discovered Stem Talk. It really has been a pleasure listening to your podcasts and thankfully my brain has started reversing from mush into something more solid! Thank you ... more

  • STEM-Talk

Admittedly, I’ve been watching intermittently but each episode I watch provides a new avenue which my PI, to his dismay, has here outlandish ideas.

Despite studying physiology, I think each niche of science is equally as captivating and provides perspectives to be knitted together. Whether it’s unique or bizarre.

The most recent talk, though ultimately opposing many of the current views in environmental discussion, it provides an excellent challenge for research to search for new avenues to i... more

Used to be great, now it’s just a platform for Ken to bang on about the evils of carbs and deny the damage caused by climate change.

  • Done after Curry episode.

Didn’t find this the most entertaining science podcast but I’m done after giving the multimillionaire mouthpiece Judith Curry a platform without any real pushback. I listened all the way. She had the gall to call another out for cherry-picking. But to throw in that installing solar panels contributed to the Hawaii fire because they weren’t there to cut grass, is cash check from the fossil fuel industry. There are none of those on the island so make it not make sense.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 198: Blessing or curse? Dawn grills Ken on listeners’ toughest AI questions in this all-AI AMA
Q: How do you view the Future of Life Institute petition calling for a pause and broader warnings about AI risk; would you personally sign it?
He finds the statement too vague to be actionable and believes a serious policy proposal should specify mechanisms, probabilities, and concrete steps; the value is in provoking thoughtful discussion, not endorsing broad doom narratives.
Episode 198: Blessing or curse? Dawn grills Ken on listeners’ toughest AI questions in this all-AI AMA
Q: What are your thoughts on orbital data centers powered by solar arrays in space as a solution to AI's energy demands?
Ken expresses skepticism about space-based data centers, citing substantial engineering challenges in heat rejection, radiators, and networking, and argues that timelines for large-scale orbital infrastructure are unrealistic compared with terrestrial approaches; he emphasizes that energy infrastructure remains a major bottleneck.
Episode 197: Scott Sherr discusses hyperbaric oxygen therapy, methylene blue, and more
Q: Can you summarize the basic mechanism of HBOT and how it can benefit the body beyond diving medicine?
HBOT increases inspired oxygen and atmospheric pressure, which together boost tissue oxygenation and mitochondrial function. In the short term, this reduces inflammation and improves tissue oxygen delivery; over a course of sessions it can reprogram cellular signaling, promote angiogenesis, and support tissue repair, especially when combined with foundational health optimization.
Episode 192: Ken and Dawn weigh in on ChatGPT, ketamine, urolithin-A, rapamycin, and more in wide-ranging AMA
Q: What is the current understanding of the ketamine-mTOR relationship based on the Yale 2020 study and subsequent work?
The 2020 Yale study suggested mTOR activation might be necessary for ketamine's effects, but further analysis indicated the result was fragile and not definitively causal; later larger studies did not consistently show rapamycin extending ketamine's durability, so conclusions remain tentative and require replication.
Episode 192: Ken and Dawn weigh in on ChatGPT, ketamine, urolithin-A, rapamycin, and more in wide-ranging AMA
Q: What did the 2025 rapamycin study in older adults with preserved ejection fraction find, and how should we view its results?
The pilot Mayo Clinic study reported safety and improvements in diastolic function and related vascular parameters with low-dose rapamycin, but given the small sample and open-label design, results are preliminary and should be replicated in larger, controlled trials to confirm disease-modifying potential.
