  • STEM-Talk

Admittedly, I’ve been watching intermittently but each episode I watch provides a new avenue which my PI, to his dismay, has here outlandish ideas.

Despite studying physiology, I think each niche of science is equally as captivating and provides perspectives to be knitted together. Whether it’s unique or bizarre.

The most recent talk, though ultimately opposing many of the current views in environmental discussion, it provides an excellent challenge for research to search for new avenues to i... more

Used to be great, now it’s just a platform for Ken to bang on about the evils of carbs and deny the damage caused by climate change.

  • Done after Curry episode.

Didn’t find this the most entertaining science podcast but I’m done after giving the multimillionaire mouthpiece Judith Curry a platform without any real pushback. I listened all the way. She had the gall to call another out for cherry-picking. But to throw in that installing solar panels contributed to the Hawaii fire because they weren’t there to cut grass, is cash check from the fossil fuel industry. There are none of those on the island so make it not make sense.

  • The Science Podcast to Rule All Others

STEM-Talk are indepth interviews with really interesting scientists and engineers working right at the front edge.

These episodes are in-depth discussions with really fascinating scientists and engineers. The health related episodes are particularly interesting as the hosts and the guests go pretty far down some deep rabbit holes. Also, I love the episodes about space exploration. AMA episodes are also wonderful. Thanks!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 192: Ken and Dawn weigh in on ChatGPT, ketamine, urolithin-A, rapamycin, and more in wide-ranging AMA
Q: What is the current understanding of the ketamine-mTOR relationship based on the Yale 2020 study and subsequent work?
The 2020 Yale study suggested mTOR activation might be necessary for ketamine's effects, but further analysis indicated the result was fragile and not definitively causal; later larger studies did not consistently show rapamycin extending ketamine's durability, so conclusions remain tentative and require replication.
Episode 192: Ken and Dawn weigh in on ChatGPT, ketamine, urolithin-A, rapamycin, and more in wide-ranging AMA
Q: What did the 2025 rapamycin study in older adults with preserved ejection fraction find, and how should we view its results?
The pilot Mayo Clinic study reported safety and improvements in diastolic function and related vascular parameters with low-dose rapamycin, but given the small sample and open-label design, results are preliminary and should be replicated in larger, controlled trials to confirm disease-modifying potential.
Episode 192: Ken and Dawn weigh in on ChatGPT, ketamine, urolithin-A, rapamycin, and more in wide-ranging AMA
Q: What did the urolithin A research discussed in 2025 show, and which brand is most commonly used in trials?
A 2025 study with 50 healthy adults showed a short, high-dose course of urolithin A could safely shift immune cell populations and inflammatory markers toward a youthful pattern; Mitopure by Timeline is the commonly used brand in trials, though cost is a consideration.
Episode 192: Ken and Dawn weigh in on ChatGPT, ketamine, urolithin-A, rapamycin, and more in wide-ranging AMA
Q: What are the implications of ChatGPT denying a high-profile event and how might LLMs be improved to handle fast-moving current events
ChatGPT's denial reflects the model's cutoff training data and tendency to avoid asserting breaking news; newer systems with real-time search and retrieval (RAG) can ground outputs with current sources, but users should verify information due to potential inaccuracies in fast-moving contexts.
Episode 192: Ken and Dawn weigh in on ChatGPT, ketamine, urolithin-A, rapamycin, and more in wide-ranging AMA
Q: What is the Neutral Buoyancy Lab, and why do astronauts train underwater when it doesn't recreate zero gravity?
The Neutral Buoyancy Lab provides a neutral buoyancy environment where astronauts' suits are weighted to hover rather than sink or float, allowing practice of spacewalk movements, tool use, stringing together maneuvers, and coordinating with a full mission control during simulations; it isn't a perfect vacuum replica, but it's the best large-scale platform for training those exact tasks.
