  • Curiosity

Whether I’m considering science, poetry, carpentry, or music, nothing opens the door to enlightenment wider than the (spoken or unspoken) phrase “I’m curious…” If there’s a secret sauce to Spotlight On, I believe that it’s Lawrence Puryear’s curiosity. And he always approaches his guests with the respect of having done his homework. He’s researched careers and discographies, so we know that his questions come from a place of intellectual truth. “I understand some of what you’re doing, but I want... more

  • One of the More Entertaining Music Chat Podcasts Out There

I think Lawrence is one of the best under-the-radar podcast interviewers in podcast-land. These shows feel like fly-on-the-wall conversations, with Lawrence often prompting his guests into pleasantly unexpected topics and revealing glimpses into the creative process. Even if the guest is someone I know nothing about, I always come away entertained and learning something new about what makes music tick. A gem!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Graham St. John: Terence McKenna's Hallucinatory Life
Q: How do you find that sentiment manifesting in him?
He embodies a paradoxical figure that challenges traditional views and continues to influence discussions on psychedelic culture.
Graham St. John: Terence McKenna's Hallucinatory Life
Q: What does the word 'hallucinatory' capture about Terence McKenna's life?
It reflects the challenges in distinguishing between truth and imagination in McKenna's narratives.
Marcus Roberts: Jazz Piano and Technology's Promise
Q: Help me understand if you're able to. What complexity is getting introduced that degrades experience when you introduce playing instruments?
Zoom was designed for voice interaction. When introducing music, it tries to cancel anything not recognized as voice, which degrades the audio quality.
Marcus Roberts: Jazz Piano and Technology's Promise
Q: I'd love to hear the origin story of your interest in this.
It started in 2020 when everything shut down. I was commissioned to write a piece during that time, which I wrote called United We Play. We did it remotely, which made it obvious that there should be better ways for collaborating.
Nels Cline: Tales of a Daunted Guitarist
Q: What do you think your collaborators look for in playing with you?
I think they expect some funny noises and maybe some musical intensity.
