  • Great speakers but lack scientific humility

Great discussions from leading experts but sadly fail to demonstrate the humility needed as true scientists. The scientific method requires constant evaluation and at any time will be only partially “correct” representation of the truth.. They weaken their stance by suggesting they are the only source of truth, whilst failing to understand the wider role of food in people’s lives.

  • Reliable + Evidence Based

Evidence based, nuanced, no hype. Expert interviews, deep dives, detailed and clear explanations. My go-to source for all nutrition questions. Having listened to well over 100 episodes, Sigma has easily become my favorite podcast. Danny is an exceptional interviewer, and he and Alan have a talent for cutting through the confusion to tease out what the science really shows (and how/why). I’ve grown in careful, critical thinking in all spheres of life. Highly recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#602: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) – Megan Hellner, DrPH, RD & Katherine Hill, MD
Q: What does evidence-based treatment look like for ARFID?
A multidisciplinary team is recommended, including a mental health professional, a dietitian, and a medical provider; behavioral treatments like family-based therapy and exposure-based approaches are central, with nutrition restoration as a core target.
#602: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) – Megan Hellner, DrPH, RD & Katherine Hill, MD
Q: What exactly is ARFID, and how is it distinct from selective eating or neophobia?
ARFID is a feeding disturbance characterized by persistent restriction that leads to medical, nutritional, or psychosocial consequences, and it lacks the body image concerns or fear of weight gain seen in other eating disorders.
#603: Should Dietary Fiber Be Considered Essential? – Andrew Reynolds, PhD
Q: What is the historical definition of essential nutrients and how does fiber fit into it?
The traditional criteria require a physiological function, a deficiency state that can be reversed, and the nutrient's necessity for survival; fiber struggles to meet the explicit deficiency state, prompting consideration of redefining essentiality.
#594: Can Muscle Still Adapt Positively When Training Under Low Energy Availability? – Jose Areta, PhD
Q: What are some of the next research questions that would naturally fall from this work?
Future research should explore muscle responses in the absence of exercise and assess functional outcomes, ensuring unbiased study designs.
#594: Can Muscle Still Adapt Positively When Training Under Low Energy Availability? – Jose Areta, PhD
Q: What type of information are we getting here from the use of dynamic proteomics?
Dynamic proteomics provides a more granular analysis of muscle protein changes, allowing us to see qualitative adaptations rather than just quantitative changes in size.
