Dr. José Areta and colleagues recently carried out a human intervention study examining how a pronounced, short-term energy deficit interacts with an aerobic training stimulus to shape endocrine, metabolic, and skeletal muscle proteomic adaptations. more

While the term "hyperpalatable" has been used frequently for considerable time to refer to foods that are so appealing and tasty that they drive overeating, this term hasn't been well-defined nor has there been a universal standard for what it means.... more

In this episode, the discussion turns to a deceptively simple question that sits at the centre of countless nutrition debates: how much protein do we actually need?

On one side, there are confident claims that very high protein intakes are not just... more

  • Great speakers but lack scientific humility

Great discussions from leading experts but sadly fail to demonstrate the humility needed as true scientists. The scientific method requires constant evaluation and at any time will be only partially “correct” representation of the truth.. They weaken their stance by suggesting they are the only source of truth, whilst failing to understand the wider role of food in people’s lives.

  • Reliable + Evidence Based

Evidence based, nuanced, no hype. Expert interviews, deep dives, detailed and clear explanations. My go-to source for all nutrition questions. Having listened to well over 100 episodes, Sigma has easily become my favorite podcast. Danny is an exceptional interviewer, and he and Alan have a talent for cutting through the confusion to tease out what the science really shows (and how/why). I’ve grown in careful, critical thinking in all spheres of life. Highly recommend.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#594: Can Muscle Still Adapt Positively When Training Under Low Energy Availability? – Jose Areta, PhD
Q: What are some of the next research questions that would naturally fall from this work?
Future research should explore muscle responses in the absence of exercise and assess functional outcomes, ensuring unbiased study designs.
#594: Can Muscle Still Adapt Positively When Training Under Low Energy Availability? – Jose Areta, PhD
Q: What type of information are we getting here from the use of dynamic proteomics?
Dynamic proteomics provides a more granular analysis of muscle protein changes, allowing us to see qualitative adaptations rather than just quantitative changes in size.
#594: Can Muscle Still Adapt Positively When Training Under Low Energy Availability? – Jose Areta, PhD
Q: Can you give us an introduction into the thrust for that particular study? What was it?
The study examined what happens to skeletal muscle adaptation when aerobic exercise is combined with an energy deficit.
#593: Can We Define Hyper-Palatable Foods? And Is Processing Actually the Problem? – Tera Fazzino, PhD
Q: Can you give people an insight into your academic background, your research interests, and anything else that might be relevant for our discussion today?
Dr. Fazzino explains she has a PhD in experimental psychology, and initially focused on addiction science before moving into food and obesity research, particularly hyper palatable foods which have addictive qualities.
#590: Is the Nutrient Density of Crops Declining? – Edward Joy, PhD
Q: What does research suggest about the historical claim of declining micronutrient concentrations in crops?
While evidence indicates a stable micronutrient concentration in wheat until the late 1960s, subsequent agricultural practices led to declines across various micronutrients due to reliance on modern high-yielding varieties.
