  • Helping a deregulated child

I just listened to the episode on what to say when your child says “I’m stupid” etc. I learnt so much about self regulation before helping a child. I took away lots of tools and things to say. Both in moment and later at a debrief. And also some tools to help my child become more resilient and confident.

Thank you so much. I’ll be back for more episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A: How can I help my sensitive child stand up for themself to peers?
Q: How can I support a child who is naturally sensitive and not loud in asserting boundaries with peers?
Focus on matching the teaching to the child's energy, start with quick, simple boundary cues (like a hand signal or short phrase), and gradually add longer scripts as the child gains confidence. Practice in low-stakes settings and use real-life but brief scenarios to build readiness for the playground.
The mattering gap: Why so many parents feel invisible, overwhelmed, and disconnected with Jennifer Wallace
Q: How can parents help their kids understand that their gifts and contributions matter beyond mere feelings?
By connecting daily actions to tangible impact, inviting kids to fill small needs in the family and community, and emphasizing that their value comes from what they contribute, not just who they are.
The mattering gap: Why so many parents feel invisible, overwhelmed, and disconnected with Jennifer Wallace
Q: What have you learned about what's been helpful for people who are trying to find mutual mattering in adulthood?
Practically, people benefit from carving out regular, meaningful social time and inviting others into their lives, which strengthens reciprocal mattering and lowers cortisol through social support.
Q&A: How do I tell my child he's going to start therapy?
Q: hello, doctors, do you have any tips on how to tell my seven-year-old that he is going to start therapy appointments?
The hosts suggest meeting with the parents first to understand the child's perspective, using the child's own language to describe feelings, and framing therapy as a normal, collaborative part of family life rather than something that signals something is wrong. They also advise asking the child what they want to get out of therapy and ensuring the child has buy-in, with emphasis on age-appropriate explanations and involvement.
Q&A: How do I help my toddler cope with an absent parent?
Q: How should I talk to my toddler about the absent parent without making them more anxious?
Focus on a developmentally appropriate, neutral explanation, validate the child's feelings, and provide a stable routine. If needed, acknowledge the question but say you will revisit it later to avoid constant disruption, ensuring you come back with clear, thoughtful wording.
