  • Helping a deregulated child

I just listened to the episode on what to say when your child says “I’m stupid” etc. I learnt so much about self regulation before helping a child. I took away lots of tools and things to say. Both in moment and later at a debrief. And also some tools to help my child become more resilient and confident.

Thank you so much. I’ll be back for more episodes.

  • Grateful

Thank you Sarah and Caity for the podcast on breath holding and for answering my question. I am so grateful! It was super comforting knowing you both have experienced it too and the information you gave has certainly helped my understanding of breath holding spells. I feel more confident now that I can support my little boy in the way he needs before during and after these spells. Thank you again!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A: Are time-ins better than time-outs?
Q: How should a parent decide which tool to use in a given moment?
Parents should diagnose what they're trying to solve: is it regulation, skill-building, or a developmental phase? Then choose the tool that targets that issue, while staying calm and connected to support long-term growth.
Q&A: Are time-ins better than time-outs?
Q: Hi Dr. Bren, what's the core difference between time-ins and time-outs in practice?
In practice, a time-in centers on connecting, deescalating, and understanding what the child is experiencing, while a time-out is a structured consequence used when the child is in control of a behavior and the goal is to reduce reinforcement for that behavior.
Q&A: How do I handle sibling rivalry when my baby keeps touching my toddler's toys?
Q: This question is about sibling rivalry, so I feel like we might have something to say about the matter.
The speakers emphasize giving each child territory and labeling what belongs to whom, using boundaries that protect a child's special items while teaching toddlers to modify behavior in a developmentally appropriate way. They encourage separating spaces, communicating that some things are off-limits to the baby, and gradually teaching cooperative play as development progresses.
Why kids remember more when they write by hand: What screens might be costing your child's brain with Dr. Audrey van der Meer
Q: What practical steps can parents take to balance handwriting with digital learning?
Encourage handwriting for note-taking and short writing tasks, support paper-based reading where feasible, integrate brief tactile activities into daily routines, and be mindful of screen time to ensure key brain networks are engaged through varied modalities.
Q&A: Is letting my anxious child sleep in my bed helping or making their anxiety worse?
Q: Is letting my anxious child sleep in my bed helping them feel secure or making their fear worse?
It's not a simple yes or no; the impact depends on the broader family system, how the sleep arrangement is framed, and whether you're using it as a temporary accommodation while you simultaneously work on distress tolerance and other supports. The clinicians suggest that you can balance both approaches and that gradual, targeted changes often work better than blanket rules.
