  • Helping a deregulated child

I just listened to the episode on what to say when your child says “I’m stupid” etc. I learnt so much about self regulation before helping a child. I took away lots of tools and things to say. Both in moment and later at a debrief. And also some tools to help my child become more resilient and confident.

Thank you so much. I’ll be back for more episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A: Why does my child go from being fine to melting down in a matter of seconds?
Q: How can I set limits with a child who has big meltdowns around everyday transitions like turning off the TV or leaving the park without instantly triggering a meltdown?
The hosts suggest reframing limits as predictable, collaborative moments. Use warnings, timers, and warnings ahead of transitions; get close to the child during the moment; pair the limit with a comforting presence (e.g., sit next to them, offer a hand); and plan for snacks or rest to reduce trigger factors. They emphasize that meltdowns may still happen, but with anticipation, scaffolding, and holding space for the limit, the intensity and frequency can decrease over time.
Lice explained: How to treat it, stop the spread, and skip the shame, from a registered nurse
Q: What are some ways to talk about lice with a child to prevent fear and shame?
Explain that lice are a contagious nature thing, like a cold, and emphasize that no one did anything wrong; use age-appropriate language, name the condition, and avoid blame, so children feel supported and less anxious.
Q&A: What should I do when my toddler hits or pulls my hair?
Q: What should this parent do in the moment when the toddler hits or pulls hair, especially if they are tired and depleted?
Set clear physical and emotional boundaries to protect herself, acknowledge the child's big feelings, and slow down to re-establish regulation; ensure the child has access to basic needs (sleep, meals, movement) and use the moment to model calm, predictable responses while re-engaging co-regulation once the adult is calmer.
Q&A: Are time-ins better than time-outs?
Q: How should a parent decide which tool to use in a given moment?
Parents should diagnose what they're trying to solve: is it regulation, skill-building, or a developmental phase? Then choose the tool that targets that issue, while staying calm and connected to support long-term growth.
Q&A: Are time-ins better than time-outs?
Q: Hi Dr. Bren, what's the core difference between time-ins and time-outs in practice?
In practice, a time-in centers on connecting, deescalating, and understanding what the child is experiencing, while a time-out is a structured consequence used when the child is in control of a behavior and the goal is to reduce reinforcement for that behavior.
