  • Useful and grounded

This is the only parenting podcast I listen to. Janet has such a simple way of addressing complex topics and I really appreciate how she approaches everyone, the children and adults with respect. She also helps parents advocate for themselves in their relationships with their children, which is a little different than some other approaches I’ve seen with “gentle parenting.” I definitely recommend this podcast!

  • Great Anecdotal Suggestions for RIE Parenting

I came across Janet’s blog while searching for respectful authoritative parenting advice. After reading a few essays, I purchased the Master Class and started listening to the podcast. The way Janet reinforces parents’ confidence in relating to their children and handling specific situations is so helpful. Her presentation on the podcast is very casual and easy to absorb. I appreciate Janet’s work and the RIE approach. I find it refreshing compared to authoritarian advice from relatives. T... more

  • ?

Found this podcast through a parent group. It’s not always applicable to highly active, strong willed kids. The host’s vocal fry voice is grating on my nervous system. Her voice is all over the place. The info is good but it takes forever to get to the point.

  • Game changer

This is the simplest most resonant advice i’ve found which has given me the north star of recognising my own state rather than being swept away by my toddlers state!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Answer to Hitting
Q: What should we do when she talks about hitting or says things like she wants to hit until someone bleeds?
Recognize she's in a zone of dysregulation and misdirect the interaction toward connection and safety, rather than punishment; sit with her, validate her feelings, and communicate that you will help her through the uncomfortable moment while not allowing the behavior to continue.
The Answer to Hitting
Q: Hi Janet, I'm not really sure where to start. I somewhat know what is going on, but I feel very overwhelmed and defeated by the problem I'm having with my almost two and a half year old daughter.
The child's behavior is signaling overwhelm and a need for support; respond with empathy, acknowledge the feelings, and create a space where the child can express scary thoughts safely. Rather than forcing stop signals, help her feel seen and grounded, especially during the pregnancy transition.
How Forcing Kids to Do Stuff Backfires (And What to Do Instead)
Q: What should we do instead of physically restraining a child to brush their teeth?
Lead with a calm, casual approach, offer autonomy, place the task within a routine, and maintain a positive connection; acknowledge feelings, model behavior, and back off when needed, so the child feels ownership and cooperates willingly rather than being forced.
Why Parents Need RIE (with Melani Ladygo)
Q: What do you believe is the biggest gift that RIE gives to parents and children?
It is the trusting relationship and the peacefulness that RIE instills, helping parents to see their child's capabilities and engage with them comfortably.
Why Parents Need RIE (with Melani Ladygo)
Q: How do you generally express the philosophy of RIE?
The RIE approach teaches parents how to have respectful, reciprocal relationships with babies and toddlers, focusing on caring while educating.
