Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hadrien Canter, CEO and Co-founder of Alta Ares: BREAKING: Alta Ares just raised $50m
Q: How did you get involved in this field given your unconventional background for a defense founder?
Hadrien explains a shift from legal and humanitarian work to hands-on defense work in Ukraine and the Middle East, leveraging multilingual and regional experience to pursue a mission-driven company that serves European security needs.
Real leather without animals in a $100bn market: Michael Newton, CEO at Qorium
Q: Give us the intro, give us the pitch. What are you building?
Qorium is building a leather product that uses animal-free, cellular agricultural processes to create a uniform, high-quality leather that can be dropped into existing tannery supply chains. The goal is to deliver the luxury feel and durability of traditional leather but with significantly reduced environmental impact and no animal sourcing, aiming for cost efficiencies and scalable production.
Johannes von Borries and Benjamin Erhart, GPs at UVC Partners: Backing Europe’s next deep tech champions
Q: How do you reassure LPs about backing such capital-intensive, long-horizon bets?
Trust comes from consistency with past performance, credibility in the thesis, and a structured seed-to-growth strategy that preserves risk discipline while enabling bold bets.
Johannes von Borries and Benjamin Erhart, GPs at UVC Partners: Backing Europe’s next deep tech champions
Q: How do you view the Isar and Proxima journeys in terms of timelines, testing, and funding needs?
Both are about rapid, rigorous testing and manufacturing execution; the goal is to compress timelines to demonstrate viability, then scale, with government and ecosystem support helping to share risk and accelerate progress.
Johannes von Borries and Benjamin Erhart, GPs at UVC Partners: Backing Europe’s next deep tech champions
Q: What are you looking for at that growth stage that's going to get you excited and what's going to make you want to invest?
We want big winners that can compete globally, particularly in deep tech, and we see a gap in capital for leading growth investments; our approach combines the portfolio support with selective external opportunities to speed up scale.
