V.V. Ganeshananthan: Sri Lanka, Civilians in War & Journalism in Fiction
Q: What was your thinking with that?
To reclaim men as civilians and individuals, instead of stereotypes of toxicity or aggression in the context of conflict.
V.V. Ganeshananthan: Sri Lanka, Civilians in War & Journalism in Fiction
Q: How much is it based on your parents?
It's not particularly based on my parents, but the research involved a lot of interviewing people who lived through that time.
Effie Black: Grief, Books Recs & Queer Readings
Q: What are your favourite books and how have they impacted you?
One of my absolute favorites is Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, and I think it’s a tragic irony that someone who wrote something so powerful could experience such deep personal despair.
Effie Black: Grief, Books Recs & Queer Readings
Q: What made you want to include the queer book club?
I think in some ways that chapter formed that function—a bit of light relief from some of the more traumatic chapters.
Pam Williams: Windrush, Writers Groups & London
Q: Did all your years of teaching and working with kids help a lot with writing this?
I spent 20 years working as a fashion journalist, so it didn't influence it much. But my insight from working with foster children helped me understand the complexity of their emotional struggles.
