  • Favourite Learning Tool

I love this podcast because like Pete, I came to sailboat racing later in life.

Pete, being endlessly curious, passionate about sailing, and thoughtful, therefore understands what he does not know to be the best he can be, so asks similar questions as I might, as I struggle to be better racer, sailor, skipper, and owner.

  • Great podcast for yacht racing!

Love Sailfaster - I’ve taken away so many useful tips from the chats with top sailors. I keep a notebook next to me when listening! So many sailing podcasts are too general, or feature crusty and boring old guys. Sailfaster is different - I like the self-deprecating vibe the British host brings to the conversation, I suspect it’s disarming and prompts the interviewees to spill their beans on what makes them better racers!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Beneteau First Series and the "Effortless Joy of Planing"
Q: Why is double-handing exploding in Europe and moving into the US?
It's driven by aging club racers, the increasing difficulty of assembling a full crew, and the economics and logistics of getting seven or eight people to a distant regatta; two-handed or short-handed formats are more accessible and intense without the burden of large crews.
How to Sail Faster—Whatever Your Boat's Rating
Q: Do you think there's that sort of temptation or in fact the imperative to do things differently when you're a low-rated boat?
Yes, there is a need to do things a little differently to unlock speed and stay in close company with faster boats, especially in varied conditions and courses.
From On The Rocks To On The Transat Start Line...Ambre Hasson's Journey
Q: Why pursue double-handed Class 40 racing after Mini Transat experience?
Double-handed racing concentrates learning and accelerates progress because you're paired with a partner, which enhances decision-making, strategy, and performance development, and it lets me target a Transat with a more powerful platform.
From On The Rocks To On The Transat Start Line...Ambre Hasson's Journey
Q: What helped you rebuild confidence after losing your first boat and facing a long recovery?
Staying connected with the sailing community, continuing training, and having a plan to get back on the water with a newer boat. The mental shift came from consistent training, a little anger at not giving up, and the realization that progress comes from showing up and pushing through fear.
From On The Rocks To On The Transat Start Line...Ambre Hasson's Journey
Q: How do you determine the point at which you should push hard versus backing off to preserve the boat?
It starts with knowing your boat and your own limits, then using experience to read weather, currents, and sail handling. You push gradually to find your friction point, and you learn to balance pushing with maintaining control and the boat's integrity.
