  • A real research-based math podcast

I have found this podcast to be extremely useful! I appreciate how it is research-based (bridging research into practice) and guests are PhD level experts. This podcast also gets right to the math topic - we get a brief intro about the guest but there is not 10 minutes of chat or the life story of a speaker. This is a great podcast for quick learning rooted in research!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[From the Archives] Recording Student Thinking During a Mathematics Discussion with Nicole Garcia
Q: What practical steps can teachers take to practice these principles within a team?
Use video analyses, visit colleagues' classrooms or watch classroom videos, debrief recordings with peers, and start with one principle to improve; collaborate regularly to refine practice.
[From the Archives] Recording Student Thinking During a Mathematics Discussion with Nicole Garcia
Q: Can you explain dual labeling and how it helps connect informal language with formal mathematical vocabulary?
Dual labeling presents both the student-friendly label and the formal term side by side, helping students link their own ideas to the standard vocabulary and gradually shift to the formal terminology.
[From the Archives] Recording Student Thinking During a Mathematics Discussion with Nicole Garcia
Q: What does it look like to capture the core ideas rather than just the steps in a solution?
Record the underlying strategies and the thinking process (e.g., why a student counts a certain way, what the counting represents) so that others can apply the idea to different problems.
[From the Archives] Recording Student Thinking During a Mathematics Discussion with Nicole Garcia
Q: Why is it important to explicitly call out that the thinking being recorded is the students' thinking and not the teacher's?
To ensure fidelity to student ideas, avoid misrepresentation, and create recordings that truly reflect what students are thinking, which helps other students understand and build on those ideas.
[From the Archives] Making Sense of Fractions with Susan Empson, PhD
Q: Can you describe the two types of story problems that are especially useful for eliciting and developing children's fraction understandings?
Equal sharing problems help students create fractional amounts by distributing whole items and then partitioning the leftovers, while special-number–of-groups problems have a whole number of groups with a unit fraction in each group; both approaches connect students' informal ideas to symbolic fraction reasoning.
