For 44 years, I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. I invite you to join me for a nostalgic and sometimes revealing look back through the tr... more

  • Has hunting tech gone too far?

I agree in many ways that recent tech has made us a bit lazy and reliant on fancy tools and gadgets not used 20-30 years ago. Some of these tools make us better marksman but not necessarily better hunters. I am guilty of this myself. Working in pest management I need to be accurate and efficient so I have started using LRF thermal and night vision optics to bend the odds in my favour.

When it comes to actual hunting I use a handheld LRF and dope card to dial for accuracy. If I were really tryi... more

  • 425 episodes and I'm out

Listened to the entire run of the show up to this point. Had enough of the anecdotal evidence to prove a point, rejection of anecdotal evidence when it doesn't agree, complete lack of study or understanding of biology but talking about it authoritatively. Maybe take some classes and understand things before blabbering about it authoritatively and rejecting anyone who tries to provide real information. I'm out.

What is Your Old Gun Worth? The Secret to Determining Your Gun’s Real Market Value Eps. 489
Q: Could you run through the inventory and valuation process for firearms ownership and inheritance planning?
Dwight outlines starting with a written plan, cataloging make, model, serial, history, and a current market value, then updating annually and converting that plan into actions for liquidation or transfer through trusted channels depending on the asset's value.
Do Clean Rifles Really Shoot Better? Eps. 487
Q: Which cartridge would you recommend for a Montana elk hunt given a 25-06 with a 20-inch barrel?
If stability with a fast twist is available, using a faster twist would help stabilize heavier bullets; otherwise, balance velocity and bullet weight, and consider switching to a configuration that maintains accuracy while keeping recoil manageable.
Do Clean Rifles Really Shoot Better? Eps. 487
Q: Have you ever done any lapping to the barrels, or had a need to?
Yes, I suggested a sequence of steps starting with torqueing the bedding screws, then cleaning the barrel, followed by checking barrel-to-stock consistency, free-floating, and other refinements to improve accuracy.
From NYC to the Woods… Can They Actually Do It? Eps. 482
Q: How did Learn To Hunt NYC start and evolve?
Neal describes starting in 2014, the challenges of apprentice licensing, and how New Jersey's apprentice license changes enabled him to offer guided hunts more regularly, expanding from occasional clients to a full-time, multi-hunt schedule by 2019.
From NYC to the Woods… Can They Actually Do It? Eps. 482
Q: Can you give us a little background on yourself?
