This isn’t a podcast for total beginners. We’re going to assume that you know what plot structure is, what a protagonist is, where ideas come from, and how to use a semicolon. This is a podcast for people who can already write okay, but want to do better.

This podcast is more about being a better artist. One who has compassion, passion, and wants to present their unique vision. This podcast examines trends in genre art and discusses how the artist makes a difference and can improve the world.
This podcast always makes me think even if I don’t always agree. My biggest gripe is I wish they would talk as deeply about the things they love as the do the things they hate.
I’m also a fan of Raquel’s Everyone is Beautiful piece for Blood Knife but found the podcast through people yelling at her for being right.
It’s particularly worth your time if you find yourself worn down by commercialized geek culture and the genre (and/or) publishing scenes; I definitely am, but if you collect Funko pops you might feel affronted. Sorry. No punches are pulled here. Content-wise, the guests are great and the insight into process is valuable. Discussion does tend to circle the s... more
If you can get through the intellectual status anxiety, a good casual cast.
I discovered this after reading Raquel’s piece on sexlessness in contemporary blockbusters. The show is a perfect balance between thoughtful insight and casual venting between writers in conversation.
Spent the better part of an episode denying the Shoah by comparing their pissant problems to it.
Insightful and funny right from the top. So glad I found this!
I’ve only listened to one episode and am excited to hear more!
The 1 star review brigade that R. S. Benedict has received for daring to suggest fanfics aren’t serious training or necessarily healthy communities for budding writers should be a clear indication of the level of maturity of the show’s detractors. The guests and discussions about writing and culture on this show are thought-provoking and substantive rather than just commercial and affirming. If you’re serious about making good art the topics and perspectives here are absolutely worth your time!
Fanfiction is bad
Couldn't even think of a good enough podcast title...smh
Ironically, hosted by an author who writes p badly.
If this is a send-up of the myopic, gatekeeping, pretentiousness currently infesting MFAdom, it’s brilliant; if this is an actual how-to-write-better podcast then...big yikes. A more self-important yet clueless host one could not hope to find.
I stumbled upon this podcast with an open mind, hoping to learn some more about writing. After a day of listening, during which I grew increasingly infuriated and bewildered with one of the hosts, all I can say to anyone reading this is DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.
This podcast is nothing but a few writing elitists stroking each other’s egos as they regurgitate outdated criticisms their 50 year old middle school English teachers must have drilled into them. Writing is an art. Writing is subjective... more
