  • Good ideas…and some sound effects

Frank’s ideas are very interesting. Tho - I’d prefer to skip the sound effects.

  • One of the best Finance podcasts out there

Frank is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, but he gives you his opinion, which is backed by data and well thought out and he isn’t here to sell you anything so you can take it or leave it as you wish. His ideas about portfolio allocation are outside of the current mainstream “VTI/VOO and chill,” but I went in with an open mind and opened my eyes to other ways of viewing asset classes.

Bogleheads and the like may be offended by some of Frank’s rants, but he lays out the reasoning for his app... more

  • Learn to love it

I began listening to rpr 4 years ago, initially the sound bites were annoying but the information and facts given are excellent. I grew to love sound bites. If you’re patient you’ll learn a wealth of information. Frank does this without any sponsors but out of his passion to teach others. I believe if you truly want to retire with the ability and confidence to spend money in retirement without your portfolio going broke then you’ll learn you can do it with this podcast. Five stars!!!

  • Life changing

Frank has a unique way of cutting through the noise—his 'beating of the drum' on evidence-based investing is exactly what I need to stay disciplined. More than just a podcast, it has given me the confidence to know that we’re going to be okay in retirement. In following and implementing much of his advice, I can’t thank Frank enough for the clarity and peace of mind he’s brought to our financial future.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 507: Celebrating Your Generosity With Queen Mary, Estimating Health Care Insurance Costs, Index Funds, Assorted Milkshakes, and Surviving Stagflation
Q: How often do these stagflation events occur and how should that shape portfolio design?
They are rare—roughly once in several decades—so portfolios should be designed for long-term resilience across many regimes rather than optimizing for a single historical anomaly.
Episode 507: Celebrating Your Generosity With Queen Mary, Estimating Health Care Insurance Costs, Index Funds, Assorted Milkshakes, and Surviving Stagflation
Q: What should investors consider in stagflation scenarios?
Prioritize assets that benefit from inflation and trend following, like managed futures and value-tilted equities, while avoiding overly concentrated bets in volatile sectors like energy. Maintain broad diversification to reduce risk of bubbles in any single regime.
Episode 507: Celebrating Your Generosity With Queen Mary, Estimating Health Care Insurance Costs, Index Funds, Assorted Milkshakes, and Surviving Stagflation
Q: Is there still value in index funds given the growth of algorithmic and ETF-based versions?
Yes, but definitions matter. True index funds are based on an algorithmic or sorting mechanism, not only cap-weighted S&P 500 approaches. Diversification beyond large-cap indices remains prudent, and understanding whether a fund is truly index-based or algorithmic is important when building a portfolio.
Episode 507: Celebrating Your Generosity With Queen Mary, Estimating Health Care Insurance Costs, Index Funds, Assorted Milkshakes, and Surviving Stagflation
Q: What resources or frameworks can help estimate long-term health care costs in retirement?
Use a model that prices health care in today's dollars across ages 40–65, using a single, flat inflation rate for all expenses except health care, or a breakdown by category with differentiated inflation rates. Then adjust with a realistic inflation assumption and consider subsidies later in life.
Episode 509: Navigating Financial Advisor Business Models, Intermediate Portfolios, Monthly Withdrawal Mechanics, Bitcoin Follies, And Another Thank You From Fairfax CASA
Q: Should I time rebalancing around a recession to take advantage of rising treasuries and falling stocks?
The hosts advise against market-timing rebalancing; instead, they suggest a disciplined approach, possibly partial rebalancing or band-based methods, to avoid trying to predict short-term moves.
