Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Birthright Citizens: Martha Jones on Race and Rights in the U.S.
Q: Do you think the current interpretation of 'subject to the jurisdiction thereof' is a constitutional question or a political question?
It is primarily a political question, historically shaped by immigration policy more than constitutional text; however, the Court's originalist frame has been used strategically to reinterpret citizenship, which risks deviating from the original debates.
Birthright Citizens: Martha Jones on Race and Rights in the U.S.
Q: Could you give us your perspective on this case and in general on the legal status of African Americans in the US in the period just before the beginning of the Civil War?
The Dred Scott decision underscored a contested and evolving understanding of citizenship, showing that Black Americans were treated as subordinate in law; yet dissents and later acts began to gradually redefine citizenship as a baseline, culminating in Birthright citizenship and Civil War-era reforms.
Beyond National Democracy: China’s Ideas and Ideas of China
Q: What role do memory and distortions play in shaping Chinese identity, and how is history used by regimes today?
Memory and distortions, or what the author calls the cooked past, are harnessed by regimes to legitimize current political projects, with dynasties and political movements selecting favorable versions of history to bolster national identity and political cohesion.
Beyond National Democracy: China’s Ideas and Ideas of China
Q: How has the idea of Chineseness evolved from traditional civilizational concepts to contemporary national identity?
Chineseness has repeatedly transformed as China encountered Western political concepts, internal revolutions, and global diplomacy; its self-definition has moved from a cosmopolitan civilization to a modern state balancing tradition with modernization, while continually revising which aspects of history to emphasize for legitimacy.
Beyond National Democracy: China’s Ideas and Ideas of China
Q: Please tell us some of the broad arguments of the book and how the book speaks to the current moment?
The book argues that China cannot be understood as a single fixed identity; it has multiple overlapping ideas—culture, civilization, nation, socialism, and global power—that shift over time, shaped by internal debates and external influences, and it uses a transnational approach to show how China's self-portrayal has always been contested and adaptive.
