  • All things #ImpactInvesting

Together with ImpactAlpha’s “The Brief” (Daily Newsletter) this is the best way to stay up to date and “in the know” of what’s happening in the world of Impact Investing. The show usually entertains contrasting ways, relevant topics, and the occasional subject matter expert. In my mind, a must for any practitioner, wannabe practitioner, or anyone for that matter (in the end we are all Impact Investors whether we want to or not).

Building African ecosystems for impact investing + LPs bridging the "second-wave" capital gap
Q: How are LPs responding to the challenges faced by emerging and diverse fund managers?
LPs are doubling down, supporting second and third funds, providing working capital for managers to get to revenue, and signaling a long-term commitment to diverse leadership in the ecosystem.
Building African ecosystems for impact investing + LPs bridging the "second-wave" capital gap
Q: What concrete steps are local institutions taking to mobilize capital for SMEs and job creation?
Local institutions are forming funds and fund of funds, partnering with regional pension funds, and developing instruments like fund of funds and potential impact bonds to channel capital to small and growing businesses.
Building African ecosystems for impact investing + LPs bridging the "second-wave" capital gap
Q: In your view, why is now the time to focus on Africa for impact investing?
Because Africa has a large and fast-growing demographic, a rising work force and consumer base, and local capital providers are increasingly mobilizing to fill the gap left by reduced development financing, creating a durable, homegrown ecosystem.
From lean startups to spiritual holding companies: The education of Eric Ries
Q: Explain for us the evolution of your thinking that led to the concept of spiritual holding companies and a broader governance framework.
Ries explains that his through line is about building organizations that can survive uncertainty by embedding humane values and a mission at the core, and that traditional governance often destroys value. The spiritual holding company is presented as a way to hold the mission across from board to for-profit entities, with concrete examples like industrial foundations and perpetual purpose trusts.
Los Angeles lowers the cost and complexity of capital for affordable housing + Big DAF platforms on notice
Q: So walk us through the capital stack here.
La Casa acts as a regional housing authority and uses a county sales tax revenue stream to backstop the bond, which reduces risk and lowers interest rates, enabling cheaper, quicker financing for nonprofit housing developers.
