  • All things #ImpactInvesting

Together with ImpactAlpha’s “The Brief” (Daily Newsletter) this is the best way to stay up to date and “in the know” of what’s happening in the world of Impact Investing. The show usually entertains contrasting ways, relevant topics, and the occasional subject matter expert. In my mind, a must for any practitioner, wannabe practitioner, or anyone for that matter (in the end we are all Impact Investors whether we want to or not).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Roy Swan makes the case for 'positive-sum' capitalism
Q: What's the opportunity here?
Roy explains that the opportunity lies in moving from a zero-sum perspective to a positive-sum economy where social impact and financial returns can align. By measuring externalities and investing in areas like quality jobs and affordable housing, foundations can sustain long-term financial health while advancing human welfare.
Temasek leans into emerging markets, climate adaptation and ‘sustainable living’
Q: What would you tell an asset owner who is curious but skeptical about impact investing?
Don't treat impact as a separate, softer bucket; apply the same rigorous due diligence and underwriting as you would for any other investment, and the hard trade-offs will follow as you learn by deploying even small amounts.
Rey Ramsey on moving from false choices to authentic leadership on AI and impact investing
Q: What role does transparency play in driving meaningful impact?
Transparency acts as both a learning tool and a governance mechanism; it requires documenting what data is used, how decisions are made, and how progress is measured, so that organizations can adjust strategies and share accountability with stakeholders.
Rey Ramsey on moving from false choices to authentic leadership on AI and impact investing
Q: How can foundations balance impact with financial considerations when investing in AI and technology?
By adopting venture-like flexibility in grants (venture grants), engaging in shareholder activism, and maintaining transparency and data-driven diligence to ensure investments serve racial, economic, and environmental justice while staying adaptable to evolving tech landscapes.
Rey Ramsey on moving from false choices to authentic leadership on AI and impact investing
Q: What is a false choice and what makes it such a problem in decision-making?
A false choice is a dichotomous framing that narrows options to two or a few rival narratives; the solution is to expand the aperture, look at data objectively, and consider a broader set of opportunities that can align with long-term social goals.
