  • Informative, sometimes gets off track

I’ve been listening to the podcast for about a year, and it’s providing lots of useful information. Wade gives excellent, detailed explanations. My one concern is that Alex sometimes goes off on tangents that detract from the explanations. He’s clearly trying to keep the mood of the show a bit lighter, but he can come across as goofy.

  • Difficult, annoying listen

Contains some good content but it seems like Alex and Wade value their own relationship than their relationships with the listeners. Maybe an editor would be helpful so they can enjoy making the podcast without burdening the listener with chatty and at times offensive content.

Episode 234: Cash in Retirement: When to Hold It, When to Invest It
Q: How many cash reserves should a 69-year-old have and does 40% cash in a $1 million portfolio make sense?
Having $400,000 in cash is typically excessive for someone who needs about $15,000 per year; a cash buffer of a few years of expenses is more appropriate, and risk should be balanced with the rest of the portfolio through a mix of bonds and contractual income to maintain sleep-at-night comfort.
Episode 234: Cash in Retirement: When to Hold It, When to Invest It
Q: Is it better to reinvest dividends automatically in an IRA during decumulation or distributions phase?
In general, reinvesting dividends in an IRA during the distribution phase isn't necessary; it's often simpler to reinvest automatically in an IRA and take distributions when needed, while in taxable accounts you may want to control reinvestment for tax efficiency and rebalancing.
Episode 234: Cash in Retirement: When to Hold It, When to Invest It
Q: Should I consider Roth conversions now to hedge an early death and reduce future tax burden?
Yes, Roth conversions can reduce required minimum distributions for the surviving spouse and potentially lower future tax rates, especially when higher brackets or Medicare surcharges are anticipated; plan with tax strategy in mind using the Retirement Planning framework.
Episode 234: Cash in Retirement: When to Hold It, When to Invest It
Q: What are the implications on financial matters when a spouse dies, in terms of taxes and RMDs?
The surviving spouse may move to single filers status with higher tax brackets and increased tax on Social Security, which can affect RMDs and support planning; Roth conversions can be considered to reduce future RMD burdens and manage taxes for the surviving spouse.
Episode 232: Is 4.7% the New Safe Withdrawal Rate?
Q: How do I determine what effective marginal tax rate target to use for Roth conversions and tax planning?
Determine a target EMTR and use software like a Tax Map Calculator to explore year-by-year decisions; the goal is to balance overall tax efficiency, Affordable Care Act implications, Social Security taxation, Medicare surcharges, and the interaction between long-term capital gains and ordinary income—while recognizing the target is a personal choice rather than a universal solution.
