  • Informative, sometimes gets off track

I’ve been listening to the podcast for about a year, and it’s providing lots of useful information. Wade gives excellent, detailed explanations. My one concern is that Alex sometimes goes off on tangents that detract from the explanations. He’s clearly trying to keep the mood of the show a bit lighter, but he can come across as goofy.

  • Difficult, annoying listen

Contains some good content but it seems like Alex and Wade value their own relationship than their relationships with the listeners. Maybe an editor would be helpful so they can enjoy making the podcast without burdening the listener with chatty and at times offensive content.

Episode 239: Are You Overinvested in Bonds? The Retirement Math May Surprise You
Q: Is it better to take Social Security at 62 to invest more aggressively, or delay to 70 to maximize lifetime benefits, especially for high earners with an overfunded plan?
They discuss that taking Social Security at 62 can make sense in scenarios where investments can still grow and influence, but delaying to 70 generally provides a larger protected lifetime income and survivor benefits; the decision also hinges on whether one plans to purchase annuities later and how much of the non-investment income covers expenses.
Episode 239: Are You Overinvested in Bonds? The Retirement Math May Surprise You
Q: Next question starts around the concept of whether a ladder of TIPS is better or an annuity for fixed income, particularly for an older retiree.
The hosts explain that the choice depends on time segmentation and income protection needs; TIP ladders suit time-segmentation approaches, while lifetime income annuities may be stronger for income protection as longevity risk rises with age, and that individual Retirement Income Style should guide the decision.
Episode 238: SpaceX, Mega-IPOs, and Indexing: When to Buy, When to Wait
Q: What makes SpaceX's IPO historically unique and what should investors consider beyond the hype?
SpaceX's size and the potential broader implications for future AI and space-related infrastructure are extraordinary, but investors should not assume it will be a guaranteed or typical success. Historical IPOs often underperform comparable established companies over the long run, especially after initial lock-up periods. The key is to focus on price relative to value, understand index inclusion dynamics, and avoid chasing the excitement of megacaps. A disciplined approach—considering profitability, fundamentals, and index methodology—helps prevent poor retirement outcomes from hype-driven bets.
Episode 237: Should You Spend Your HSA or Let It Grow?
Q: A listener asks about RMDs and a deferred annuity with a living benefit within a 70-75 age window and whether the annuity must be liquidated to cover RMDs.
If RMDs exceed other investments, you may be required to liquidate part of the annuity. However, you can often take non-lifetime withdrawals (up to a percentage of the initial premium or remaining contract value) without triggering surrender charges, which can reduce the contract value and modify the guaranteed income accordingly. The key takeaway is that delaying living benefits may not always be optimal; taking income sooner can sometimes be economically better, depending on the contract and other assets.
Episode 237: Should You Spend Your HSA or Let It Grow?
Q: Megan asks how to decide when to spend from an HSA and how it should be integrated with a broader tax strategy, given the tax advantages of HSAs and the potential impact on future distributions.
HSAs offer triple tax benefits (pre-tax contributions, tax-deferred growth, tax-free distributions for qualified medical expenses). The panel suggests starting to use the HSA for medical expenses, especially as Medicare age approaches, and using it strategically within a blending framework to reduce taxable income in higher-tax years. They also discuss the option of letting the HSA grow for long-term needs while keeping receipts to optimize distributions for beneficiaries.
