  • Ulnar nerve

This was one of the first informative episodes. I have experiencing hand numbness, golfers elbow, shoulder burn for the last 4 5 years. My surgeon recommends me getting surgery on elbow. He has not talked about any other sources where nerve issues could be happening. I have an appointment coming up and I will definitely share this with him.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Get Stronger, Run Better: A Conversation with Jason Fitzgerald Strength Running Podcast
Q: How should someone balance strength work with mileage as they approach peak training?
Periodize both lifting and running like base to peak phases: build a solid strength foundation early, then reduce volume while maintaining intensity as race goals approach, ensuring adequate recovery and fueling.
Get Stronger, Run Better: A Conversation with Jason Fitzgerald Strength Running Podcast
Q: Can you explain progressive overload in simple terms for newbies?
Progressive overload involves gradually increasing stimulus in a safe, planned way—more weight or more consistency over time—so the body adapts without pushing into overtraining or injury.
Get Stronger, Run Better: A Conversation with Jason Fitzgerald Strength Running Podcast
Q: What's your philosophy on getting into strength training or continuing it during an injury?
Let pain be your guide; you can train differently (e.g., cycling, pool running) to maintain aerobic fitness, and gradually reintroduce strength work as you recover, with a focus on keeping the connective tissues resilient.
Bulletproofing Your Knees and Hips for Heavy Packs and Steep Mountain Descents - Rowan Smith
Q: How do you tailor programs for people with tight schedules or short timelines before a big hike?
We tailor around the person's life, choosing a feasible number of sessions and durations, and we still hit essential strength and conditioning goals. If time is limited, we apply quick wins, energy management strategies, and gear techniques to ensure meaningful progress and reduce pain while preparing them for the hike.
Bulletproofing Your Knees and Hips for Heavy Packs and Steep Mountain Descents - Rowan Smith
Q: What are the key differences between your approach and traditional gym programs for hikers?
The approach is conservative and targeted: focus on a few high-quality exercises per session, emphasize gradual loading, and structure long-term progression so the client can train consistently without excessive soreness or risk. We prioritize functional movements that transfer to the trail, use simple equipment, and adjust based on the individual's pain and ability, rather than following a generic bodybuilding template.
