  • Awesome Episode with Melanie MacKinnon

Just tuned in for the episode with Melonie MacKinnon and really enjoyed it! The imposter syndrome out of school is real and takes a while to get over, if ever. She also touched on something I’ve heard described as Ikigai - A Japanese concept that has your reason for being at the centre of your passion, mission, profession and vocation. Great listen.

[Physio Discussed] Alternative perspectives on osteoarthritis management with Prof. Ian Harris and Prof. Jeffrey Katz
Q: What do clinicians still commonly misunderstand about osteoarthritis?
The discussion highlights that OA is not simply wear-and-tear; pain can be disproportionately related to bone, inflammation, or psychosocial factors, and imaging does not always align with symptoms. A nuanced approach that combines education, exercise, weight management, and careful interpretation of imaging is essential.
[Physio Explained] Spondylolysis management: what does the latest evidence tell us? with Mitchell Selhorst
Q: How important is the education component and addressing psychosocial aspects when bringing in physical therapy earlier?
Education is critical for reframing the injury as a bone stress issue rather than a terrible injury, which reduces fear and supports engagement in rehab. Clinicians should address psychosocial factors, including identity and social aspects of being an athlete, to prevent isolation or depression during recovery.
[Physio Explained] Spondylolysis management: what does the latest evidence tell us? with Mitchell Selhorst
Q: What might that physical therapy look like immediately, and what guidance can you give therapists who are hearing this is slightly new?
Therapy begins immediately with an Immediate Functional Progression Program that uses functional, sport-specific exercises, progressing through phases with clear criteria to advance, rather than relying on time alone. The approach emphasizes individualized, progressive loading with emphasis on core control and safe, pain-free movement to return athletes to their sport.
[Physio Explained] Spondylolysis management: what does the latest evidence tell us? with Mitchell Selhorst
Q: So I suppose we can now go into the paper a little bit in terms of what is it telling us and what did your research find, Mitchell?
The study found that resting before starting physical therapy provided no additional benefit; starting immediate physical therapy allowed athletes to return to full activity faster without negatively affecting bone healing, and it helped preserve the lumbar paraspinal muscles, reducing atrophy. It also suggested potential improvement in long-term outcomes regarding back pain recurrence.
[Physio Discussed] Inside the world of elite sports physio with Matt Cameron and Keiran Cleary
Q: How do you navigate the tension between athlete health and performance pressure?
Decisions are framed by short- and long-term risk assessments, with a focus on the best interest of the athlete, clear protocols (e.g., concussion), and maintaining team goals without compromising player welfare.
