  • A Soil Health Treasure

I have been on a mission trying every regenerative practice I can in my neighborhood yard. I have clay soil and I have southern grass that doesn’t want you to grow anything else and demands great amounts of water and is temperamental at best. As I have navigated soil health, I read a book by Elaine Ingram. I found Korean natural farming and then I met Mr. Kempf at a homesteading event in Waco, Texas. I sat on the edge of my seat scribbling feverishly and I was so delighted to find that he has do... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Podcast Extra: Ask Me Anything with John Kempf - April 9, 2026
Q: Could you please explain the basic difference between the intended use of a biological versus the intended use of a biostimulant?
Biological inoculants are living microbes that colonize the rhizosphere or leaves and interact with the plant and soil microbiome, while biostimulants are non-living inputs like humic substances, seaweed extracts, amino acids, and organic acids that stimulate plant or microbial activity; the practical distinction also involves regulatory labeling and how products are designed to work together in a cross-domain stack to achieve synergistic effects.
Podcast Extra: Our Crops Aren't Sick, They're Dependent | Soil Talks Podcast
Q: What if the presence of a pest isn't an attack but a report card?
The host and guest discuss reframing pests as signals of underlying soil and plant health issues, advocating for balancing minerals and fostering microbiome health to reduce disease pressure rather than relying on chemistry alone.
Episode 179: Rewilding Livestock Instincts for Soil Health with Bob Kinford
Q: What are the common stumbling blocks people face when adopting this proactive, murmurations-based approach to herd management?
People tend to be deeply conditioned by traditional stockmanship and education, so they resist new paradigms, fear being seen as ineffective, and underestimate how much internal perspective and observation shape outcomes; breaking habits requires conscious practice, feedback, and willingness to experiment with different approaches.
Episode 177: Leveraging Native Biology and No-Till Strategies with Bob Tillman
Q: How did soil health and plant performance change with the compost tea programs before and after introducing deeper biological analysis?
The producer observed improvements in vine health, deeper rooting, and better overall plant performance after implementing compost teas and subsequently refining the process with DNA-based science. The changes included enhanced micronutrient balance in SAP analyses, more consistent calcium and iron delivery through foliars and fertigation, and improved phenolic profiles in wine as the soil biology matured.
Episode 176: Vertical Integration for Regenerative Farmers with David Stelzer
Q: How do pricing and consumer value differ under the Azure model compared to traditional supply chains?
The Azure model reduces multiple margins by handling processing, packaging, and distribution in-house, which allows the company to keep prices competitive while paying farmers more for higher-quality regenerative inputs.
