What Enabled This Ridiculous Shot - Rowan Biddiscombe
Q: Not a huge crew. Are you using any modifiers for light? Did you have anyone for grip?
There was a lean crew, with a focus on efficiency and adaptability. We relied on natural light when possible, with minimal grip modifiers, and used practical support like a backpack rig to minimize on-mountain logistics while keeping the shot flexible.
What Enabled This Ridiculous Shot - Rowan Biddiscombe
Q: What do you think is the thing that enabled you guys to make this shot look this way?
The combination of a wider aperture with the Optex Excellence system, a strategically chosen lens setup, and a highly skilled operator, plus careful preproduction and VFX collaboration, allowed us to realize a shot that feels expansive and real within budget constraints.
How to Shoot for The North Face
Q: How did you incorporate the 'mountain ghost' phenomenon into the sequence?
We studied the rare atmospheric condition, planned for fog and light angles, and then created a plate-based sequence to show the phenomenon, using both actual location plates and post work to simulate the rainbow and shadow interaction.
How to Shoot for The North Face
Q: What was the approach to shooting on location versus in-studio?
We mixed on-location sequences in the French Alps with studio-based enhancements, using miniatures and VFX to expand the scale where necessary, while keeping the authentic, rugged feel of the environment.
How to Shoot for The North Face
Q: Give me some context on this project. How did you get involved?
The project came through Hilton in Switzerland, with Niels bringing in the team for a challenging mountain shoot. We planned a look where the mountain itself felt like a character, and the athlete had a relationship with that landscape, which guided the storytelling.
