Poseidon is the god of the sea, Dionysus of wine and merrymaking, and Emily Oster? She’s the god of parenting. An economics professor at Brown University, Oster has built a massive and loyal audience by providing overwhelmed parents with the information and data they need to make solid and sound parenting decisions in a very confusing world. Her first book, Expecting Better: Why the Conventional P... more

For most of human history, having kids wasn’t much of a choice. Social expectations, lack of birth control, and limited autonomy for women presented a couple of options: Have children, or join a convent. But the 1960s ushered in a big change. With be... more

It only takes 15 minutes for the average American parent to comb through pubmed to see that the debate around adhd and medicating children is so much more nuanced than what was offered. Secondly, if a parent has reached their end, having tried every style and behavioral management resource they can get their hands on, we shouldn’t shame them for seeking help for their child, especially when a thorough assessment is being done by an experienced clinician.
Super disappointing to learn that Free Press promotes racist, anti-science, counter factual podcasts and that Emily is part of their network. What??? I’m sorry but lost all credibility with me
While I respect Oster’s desire to present “just the facts,” and let parents make up their own mind, I have 2 major issues with this show as she built it. One, she presents all views as equally valid, when the data does not support such a conclusion. For instance, if there are 2 competing views but the evidence is 80% supportive of one view, she should consider dedicating 80% of airtime to this view, rather than a strict 50:50 split of the airtime. Specifically, so much airtime is given to Erika ... more
The mid-life episode: I wish you all had delved into defining “boring” in a deeper way. I don’t think there is such a thing as a “boring life,” but there are certainly people who are bored with their own lives as evidenced by the host. I’m glad Emily pushed back on some of the misconceptions this host had. Thank you for the perimenopause discussion. I’m 47 and have 3 teenage kiddos. I love this phase of life and see many open doors for growth and fulfillment!

I’ve been following Emily Oster from my first pregnancy a decade ago but I thought the ADHD episode was really counterproductive for a lot of families trying every which way to support their neurodivergent children. I appreciate that big pharmaceutical has some very specific problems in the US (see opioid crisis) but the heavy reliance on a British skeptic seemed to come from a very different place. Because the UK does have some national health service they will push back on certain medical wisd... more
