  • So insightful!

This podcast is opening up a whole new world to me. I am starting to realize movement is much more than I thought it was, and that it can be playful and joyful. It’s a big breath of fresh air. Also I do enjoy the reflections on movement seen through a social lens. I am going through all the episodes with much curiosity. Particularly enjoyed the talk with Katy Bowman recently! Thanks to Gill, Andrew, and their guests for giving us so much. *****

  • Thank you for these conversations!

Thank you, Gill and Andrew, for this podcast - I love it so much!! As a movement specialist in Canada, I find it so hard to guide people effectively in this world of quick-fixes, comparison and digitization. Thank you for having the conversations and providing the real-world evidence that remind us what’s important - moving naturally with a community. I’m so inspired by you - thank you!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#31. Lorraine Close. How can we make movement accessible to everyone?
Q: How do trauma-informed practices shape your teaching approach?
Trauma-informed work centers on safety, choice, collaboration, and empowerment, using invitational language and ensuring participants feel in control of their movement and environment.
#31. Lorraine Close. How can we make movement accessible to everyone?
Q: Can you describe Edinburgh Community Yoga and its core mission?
Edinburgh Community Yoga is a not-for-profit social enterprise aiming to make yoga accessible in areas without traditional studios, working with prisons, NHS, and local communities to reduce health inequality and promote well-being.
# 42. Laurel Beversdorf. Fear sells; How the fitness industry limits agency
Q: How has Movement Logic adapted its messaging about osteoporosis and bone health over time?
We moved from caution-driven messaging that warned against certain movements to a more nuanced stance that supports moderate-to-variably intense resistance training as beneficial, while acknowledging individual differences in severity. The goal is to expand options, avoid black-and-white prescriptions, and rely on high-quality evidence to determine appropriate loads and progression.
# 42. Laurel Beversdorf. Fear sells; How the fitness industry limits agency
Q: What are the main barriers you see for women engaging in progressive strength training today?
Barriers include time constraints from unequal domestic labor, cultural expectations about appearance, fear and misinformation about safety, and limited access to training approaches that feel safe and welcoming. Addressing these requires flexible programming, emphasis on autonomy, and reframing strength training as a long-term skill development pathway, not a risky or only physically demanding activity.
#30 Dr. Lawrence Foweather. Building a life-long relationship with movement
Q: How do you balance the concepts of motivation and engagement across the life course to keep people moving?
You cultivate ongoing meaning, value, and enjoyment in movement, recognizing that people are diverse and that intrinsic motivation should be supported by a framework (move/connect/think/feel) that adapts to different life stages and contexts.
