Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Intelligence, Immortality and AI with Stephen J. Cave
Q: Professor Cave, could you tell us a bit about how the institute works, how it's organized, what its aims are, and how its areas of research bring together Intelligence, Technology and Humanity?
The Institute is a young, interdisciplinary institution at Cambridge, organized into three centres: the existential risk centre; the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (which we run); and the Centre for Human-Inspired AI. Its aim is to shape technological transformation to benefit humanity and the planet, combining philosophy, social science, law, and engineering to address ethics, governance, and practical applications of AI.
The Tapestry of Consciousness and the Self: Winning Over Alzheimer’s with Rudolph E. Tanzi
Q: What drew you to Alzheimer's research as a student, and why was the amyloid hypothesis so revolutionary?
I was drawn to it by a combination of curiosity and the puzzle of why memory and gene regulation could link so directly to disease; discovering that a small beta-amyloid peptide could be produced by a larger precursor protein and that this processing could drive disease marked a fundamental shift in how we understand Alzheimer's and opened the door to disease-modifying strategies.
The Posthuman Mind Uncoupled: From Bacteria to AI with N. Katherine Hayles
Q: How do you understand cognition beyond the human mind?
Cognition is a process of interpreting information in contexts that connect with meaning, and all living organisms have cognitive capabilities by interpreting environment signals and acting on them.
Intelligence Without Brains with Toby Kiers
Q: What is it like to be you, in the context of these underground networks?
The guest explains that fungi are actors processing information through chemical and physical processes, with flows and decisions emerging from evolutionary forces over millions of years, not from a central brain; cognition is distributed across the network.
Embodied Cognition: The Music Within with Vijay Iyer
Q: What do you think about improvisation?
Improvisation is everything that escapes the archive.
