I enjoyed your interview with Michael Harvey. He struck a neat balance between Geoffrey Hinton‘s somewhat dystopian view of the future, and a more ‘human’ optimistic vision. I also appreciated the way you gave him the space and time to develop his arguments. Keep up the good work!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Dangers of Effective Altruism | Alice Crary
Q: Could you describe the history of EA, where it came from intellectually, and how it has developed over time?
EA was coined by Oxford philosophers Toby Ord and William McCaskill in 2011, building on utilitarian principles, but it has older roots related to philanthropic foundations. It received funding from Silicon Valley early on, and has evolved into a long-termist approach focusing on future threats, often overlooking pressing present issues.
An "Abundance Agenda" for Nature | Ben Goldfarb
Q: Could you give us an overview of some of the primary problems roads create for different species and ecosystems?
Goldfarb explains that roads facilitate illegal activities, cause roadkill, contribute to noise pollution, and lead to habitat fragmentation, all negatively affecting wildlife.
An "Abundance Agenda" for Nature | Ben Goldfarb
Q: Can you expand on the ecological ignorance that you see present throughout the Abundance agenda?
Goldfarb critiques the abundance agenda for not explicitly including conservation efforts, which leads to ecological degradation, despite authors likely desiring biodiversity.
Leading the Legal Fight for Animals | Jeff Kerr
Q: What are the principles or considerations that guide decisions on the legal team?
We prioritize bold action, carefully considering the wider impact of our cases and striving for advancement in the animal rights movement.
Leading the Legal Fight for Animals | Jeff Kerr
Q: What inspired you to get involved in animal law?
It was kind of serendipitous; I became aware of animal rights during a social justice lecture that led me to change my lifestyle and pursue a career in animal law.
