  • Thank you for this podcast

I love this show. I wish I’d found it years ago. It makes me feel less alone because it shows me that I’m not the only one who thinks about the world this way. And though the topics are often gloomy, it gives me hope to listen. I’m also learning a lot. Thank you Nate.

  • Dr Iain McGilchrist - true wisdom

I just listened to this episode and it truly touched me. It made me realise how disconnected from ourselves we have become in service of the capitalist machine; that sometimes we need to do nothing in order to see the beauty of all that surrounds us and giving love to our families and communities gives the soul all the reward it needs. Thank you so much for sharing this, I look forward to Part 2 and I offer a prayer of love and peace to Dr McGilchrist.

  • Best podcast

I listen to every podcast except the one with Sam Harris, the militant hard-core atheist i’m pretty sure you have a wide range of listeners, but I just cannot participate in that one. Please keep up the great work.

  • Fix the sibilance please

Love the topics covered on the show, things I think about a lot and are very important. However, the amount of sibilance in the audio makes I genuinely unlistenable. Please consider switching microphones or use different settings for compression to filter out those Hz.

The Missing Half of Climate Change: Why Our Planet is at 50% Capacity and How to Get it Back with Brett KenCairn
Q: Why is restoration to a historical baseline often insufficient, and what should regeneration look like instead?
Restoration aims to return systems to a past state that may no longer be viable under a warming, changing climate. Regeneration focuses on building capacity, diversity, and functions (soil carbon, water storage, habitat) that enhance current and future resilience, even if they look different from the historical baseline.
The Missing Half of Climate Change: Why Our Planet is at 50% Capacity and How to Get it Back with Brett KenCairn
Q: Can you explain what the 50% biocapacity improvement figure represents and what baseline is used?
The figure refers to the potential increase in global biocapacity if we restore degraded living systems, including soil, forests, and biodiversity, and treat land and water cycles as part of climate resilience, not just carbon. The baseline is a historical, higher level of planetary productivity before widespread degradation, acknowledging that today we operate well below that level.
Why Each American Lives Like a 40-Ton Whale: Power, Overshoot, and Climate with Tad Patzek
Q: What final guidance should listeners take away after processing this information?
Think critically about personal and political actions, learn science, develop practical skills, and adopt a mindset that makes people question assumptions about abundance and technology to actively shape a more sustainable future.
Why Each American Lives Like a 40-Ton Whale: Power, Overshoot, and Climate with Tad Patzek
Q: What is the best-case, worst-case, and most likely climate trajectory for the next century?
Best-case involves a highly managed, slower decarbonized transition with reduced consumption and resilient infrastructure; worst-case envisions accelerated resource depletion and governance collapse; most likely is a turbulent transition with continued growth in energy demand and geopolitical stress, leading to significant warming between roughly 1.5 and 3 degrees Celsius by 2100, depending on policy and behavior today.
Why Each American Lives Like a 40-Ton Whale: Power, Overshoot, and Climate with Tad Patzek
Q: If you had to name the one physical variable that quietly controls our fate, what would it be and why?
Power, defined as energy per unit time, is the fundamental driver of civilization; everything else—climate, population, technology—depends on how much power we can apply and how quickly we can apply it.
