  • Failure to Thrive

First of all, thank you for a very informative podcast. I’m a mom of 2..A 7yo girl and a 15mo old boy. Both are 32wks and 6days. My daughter was able to meet all her milestones and stuff, but my boy, he’s not gaining weight. When he’s 9mo old he weighed 15lbs and now that he’s 13mo old, he’s still 15lbs. Height wise he’s okay, but weight is low. He’s not walking yet and standing by himself. If you can kindly make a podcast for Failure to thrive. Things to do.. thank you and again, thank yo... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Evaluation of Febrile Infants 61-90 Days of Age - PediaCast CME 118
Q: How should clinicians use these new rules in practice?
Use the rule to guide decisions about when to obtain blood tests and urinalysis, not as an exemption from clinical judgment; when the rule indicates low risk, consider conservative management with reliable follow-up, while recognizing the variability in settings and patient appearances.
Evaluation of Febrile Infants 61-90 Days of Age - PediaCast CME 118
Q: What inclusion criteria were used for the primary analysis?
Fever defined as 38 C (100.4 F) or higher, documentation of fever via home, clinic, or ED measurements, and availability of urinalysis and blood cultures to evaluate invasive infection; excluded were critically ill or very premature infants and those with major comorbidities.
Evaluation of Febrile Infants 61-90 Days of Age - PediaCast CME 118
Q: Why focus on the 61 to 90 days age range, and what was the historical context?
The risk of invasive bacterial infection in this age group is not negligible and has been under-studied; vaccines and biomarkers have gradually shifted attention to this gray zone, enabling development of targeted prediction rules.
School Avoidance: Helping Kids Get Back to the Classroom - PediaCast CME 117
Q: So how should we screen for school avoidance during office visits?
Screening should consider any ongoing avoidance over 1-2 weeks, gathering input from family, teachers, and the child, and looking for impacts on academics, family functioning, and functioning at school; follow-up questions guide whether to involve mental health professionals and school personnel.
Navigating Infertility in Medicine - PediaCast CME 116
Q: Can you lay the groundwork for why thinking about fertility is a critical topic for medical trainees?
The medical training happens during the peak of reproductive years for women, creating a strain on childbearing abilities, leading to higher risks of infertility.
