Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#366: Israel's Unsustainable Approach to National Security with Retired Brigadier General Yoni Shimshoni
Q: You propose civil separation as a feasible path forward. Could you outline what that would entail and how it might lead to a Palestinian state while maintaining some security guarantees?
Civil separation is a process to reduce friction by gradually moving governance capacity to the Palestinian Authority, increasing its agency, and redefining territorial arrangements so it has contiguous control. It emphasizes confidence-building, preserves security capabilities, and envisions a pathway toward a Palestinian state through practical steps and regional integration, including opening architecture with other Arab states and sustaining a cooperative security framework.
#366: Israel's Unsustainable Approach to National Security with Retired Brigadier General Yoni Shimshoni
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the piece and what drove you to write it, specifically the idea that force alone cannot give Israelis the peace and security they deserve?
The shift after October 7th changed how decision-makers think about security, moving from deterrence and containment toward a fixation on victory and even absolute victory. This narrow focus makes security unidimensional and risks perpetual conflict unless there is space for diplomatic and humanitarian dimensions and for considering other strategic tools beyond force.
#365: Life Under Occupation: Resistance, Reality, and Partnership
Q: Mattan, what does it mean to slow ethnic cleansing from Here Forward, and how do you balance on-the-ground risk with advocacy back home?
Our approach is to document and document to slow down the process on the ground while accelerating political and policy changes back home, through coordinated advocacy and international support.
#365: Life Under Occupation: Resistance, Reality, and Partnership
Q: Becca, how does Achvat Amim support on-the-ground organizing and movement-building for diaspora communities?
We bring diaspora participants for extended engagement to learn about the conflict, build relationships with Palestinian communities, and translate that into sustained advocacy and funding for peace-building work.
#365: Life Under Occupation: Resistance, Reality, and Partnership
Q: So Eid, tell us about Umar Khair, what's happening to your family and community there?
We face constant intimidation and violence, including demolitions and night-time harassment by settler groups and complicit security forces, aimed at displacing people from their land and homes.
