  • A weekly requirement

One of the best parts of my Sunday mornings. Paul may not have guests every week, but hey, he’s a busy guy! Always fun topics (yes, even the magic show was fun IMO), and it’s great listening to him traverse the challenges of running a small business.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

311 - Brian Bailey (Big League Chew)
Q: How do you envision Big League Chew evolving in the next few years?
We want to become a lifestyle and media-driven brand, exploring trading cards, animated series, and enhanced IP around the pouch characters, while expanding international presence and continuing licensed product innovations.
311 - Brian Bailey (Big League Chew)
Q: What were the key turning points in the licensing strategy for Big League Chew?
The major turning points were the Wrigley/Amaral licensing years, the 2010 end of that relationship and Rob's decision to license to new partners like Ford Gum; bringing IMG Licensing on board also transformed the scale and reach of the brand.
311 - Brian Bailey (Big League Chew)
Q: When did you first come into the Big League Chew story, and what drew you to join the venture?
I joined after seeing potential in Rob and the brand beyond gum; I saw opportunities in governance, branding, and licensing, and I stepped in to help structure the business, bring in professional licensing, and scale operations.
313 - Martin Parent (Ace Hardware Inlet & Old Forge)
Q: What was the decisive moment that shifted you from surviving day-to-day to planning for a larger, multi-store operation?
Realizing the potential of a second location when a foreclosed old grocery store came up in Old Forge. I partnered with banks and leveraged family support, notably my parents putting up their house as collateral, which allowed me to expand and eventually operate two stores.
313 - Martin Parent (Ace Hardware Inlet & Old Forge)
Q: In 1986, how did you first connect with Ace Hardware and start your relationship as an independent dealer?
I called a local Ace store in Utica to get connected, they directed me to corporate where I met Harlow Beals. He laid out the steps, including buying the books and securing a $400 start. That began my Ace journey as an independent dealer.
